Area Code 251 – Zvishavane

Overview of Area Code +263 251

Area code 251 is a geographic National Destination Code (NDC) within the Zimbabwean national numbering plan, assigned to the town of Zvishavane and its surrounding administrative district in the Midlands Province. This code is used for fixed-line (PSTN) services, and it is an integral part of the E.164 international dialing format when reaching subscribers from abroad.

Geographic Coverage and Jurisdiction

Zvishavane, historically known as Shabani, is a mining town located in south-central Zimbabwe. The area code 251 covers the urban area of Zvishavane and the nearby rural communities that fall under the local telecommunications exchange. The town serves as a commercial hub for the region, with significant mining operations (including asbestos, gold, and chrome) and agricultural activities. The administrative jurisdiction falls under the Zvishavane District, which is part of the Midlands Province.

Dialing Formats

For callers within Zimbabwe, the national trunk prefix is 0. Therefore, to call a fixed line in Zvishavane from another part of the country, you would dial: 0251 XXX XXX (where X represents the local subscriber number). The complete national significant number (NSN) is 9 digits long, including the leading trunk prefix.

For international callers, the Zimbabwean country code is +263. The trunk prefix is omitted, and the area code is dialed directly. The international format is: +263 251 XXX XXX. For example, if the local number is 234 567, a local caller would dial 0251 234 567, while an international caller would dial +263 251 234 567.

Overlay and Numbering Considerations

Currently, there is no overlay code for the Zvishavane area; the 251 code is dedicated exclusively to this geographic region. Subscriber numbers within this area are typically 6 digits long, resulting in a total of 9 digits for the national significant number when combined with the area code. This structure follows the ITU-T E.164 recommendation, ensuring unambiguous routing on both national and international networks.

Caller Instructions

For local callers within Zvishavane, it is often possible to dial just the 6-digit subscriber number for local calls, depending on the specific exchange configuration. However, for calls from other regions, the full national format (0251 + subscriber number) is required. International callers must always include the +263 country code and drop the leading zero of the trunk prefix. It is also important to note that while VoIP and mobile services are widely used, fixed-line numbers under 251 remain tied to the physical location, and calls to these numbers are typically charged at standard national or international rates depending on the caller's location.
