Area Code 229 – Ninh Binh province

Geographic Overview

The +84 229 area code is a geographic National Destination Code (NDC) assigned to the Ninh Binh province in northern Vietnam. This code covers the entire province, including the provincial capital Ninh Binh City (Thành phố Ninh Bình), Tam Diep City, and the rural districts such as Gia Vien, Hoa Lu, Kim Son, Nho Quan, Yen Khanh, and Yen Mo. Geographically, Ninh Binh is located approximately 90 kilometers south of Hanoi, and the area code is part of the country's fixed-line telephony network.

Dialing Formats

For domestic callers within Vietnam, the trunk prefix '0' is dialed before the area code, followed by the subscriber number. The national format is: 0 229 XXX XXXX (where X represents the subscriber digits, typically 7 digits in length). For example, a landline in Ninh Binh might be dialed as 0229 123 4567 from other provinces.

For international callers, the country code +84 is used, and the leading '0' of the trunk prefix is omitted. The international format is: +84 229 XXX XXXX. Thus, the same number would be dialed as +84 229 123 4567 from outside Vietnam.

Caller Instructions

• Local callers within Ninh Binh: In many cases, local calls may be made using only the subscriber number (7 digits) without the area code, depending on the operator's dialing plan. However, for clarity and consistency, it is recommended to always use the full national format, especially when calling from mobile phones.
• Domestic callers from other provinces: Dial 0229 followed by the subscriber number.
• International callers: Dial the international access prefix (e.g., 00 from most countries) then 84 229 and the subscriber number. For example, from the US, dial 011 84 229 123 4567.

Regulatory and Technical Notes

The 229 area code is a geographic code under the Vietnamese National Numbering Plan, managed by the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC). As of the latest updates, no overlay code has been introduced for Ninh Binh, meaning the 229 code is the sole geographic code for the province. Subscriber numbers within this code are typically 7 digits long, but the total length of a national significant number (NSN) is 10 digits (including the area code but excluding the trunk prefix).

With the growth of VoIP and mobile telephony, some fixed-line services in Ninh Binh may be delivered over IP networks, but the geographic numbering remains tied to the province for routing and emergency services purposes. Callers should note that while mobile numbers in Vietnam use different prefixes (e.g., 03x, 05x, 07x, 08x, 09x), the 229 code is exclusively for fixed-line services.
