Area Code 5747 – Snakes, Kharkiv

Geographic Overview and Administrative Jurisdiction

The Ukrainian national destination code 5747 is a geographic area code assigned to the city of Snakes (also transliterated as Zmiyiv) in the Kharkiv Oblast of northeastern Ukraine. This code falls within the national numbering plan administered by the Ukrainian State Centre of Radio Frequencies (UCRF) and follows the ITU-T E.164 recommendation. Snakes is a city of district significance, located on the left bank of the Donets River, approximately 40 kilometers south of the regional capital, Kharkiv. The code 5747 serves the city proper and its adjacent rural settlements, including the administrative territory of the Snakes City Council.

Dialing Formats and Caller Instructions

For domestic callers within Ukraine, the number is dialed in the format 0 5747 XX XX XX, where the leading '0' is the trunk prefix used to access the national long-distance network. This format is used for calls from any other region of Ukraine. For example, to call a landline in Snakes from Kyiv, one would dial 0 5747 2 34 56 (assuming the local number is 2-34-56).

For international callers, the Ukrainian country code +380 replaces the trunk prefix '0'. Thus, the international dialing format becomes +380 5747 XX XX XX. For instance, a caller from the United States or the United Kingdom would dial +380 5747 2 34 56 to reach the same subscriber. It is important to note that the trunk prefix '0' is not included when dialing from abroad.

Numbering Structure and Overlay Considerations

Geographic numbers in Ukraine, including those under 5747, typically have a total length of 9 digits after the country code, excluding the trunk prefix. Thus, the national significant number (NSN) for Snakes numbers is 9 digits: 5747 followed by 5 local digits. The local numbering capacity allows for up to 100,000 subscriber numbers, though actual usage is lower due to the city's population of approximately 15,000 inhabitants.

As of the latest numbering plan updates, there is no overlay code for Snakes; the 5747 code is exclusively used for the geographic area. However, subscribers may have migrated to VoIP or mobile services, but the geographic code remains associated with the fixed-line network. Calls to 5747 numbers are routed via the PSTN and may be subject to transit charges depending on the caller's network.

Practical Guidance for Callers

When calling Snakes from a mobile phone within Ukraine, it is essential to include the trunk prefix '0' and the area code, even though mobile networks often allow direct dialing with the full national number. For international callers, ensure that you use the correct exit code for your country (e.g., 011 from the US, 00 from most European countries) followed by 380 and the area code without the leading '0'. Always verify the local number length, as some older numbers may have fewer digits; however, the standard format is 5 digits after the area code.
