Area Code 5544 – Gornostaevka, Kherson

Geographic Overview

The area code 5544 is a geographic National Destination Code (NDC) assigned to the town of Hornostaivka (also transliterated as Gornostaevka) and its surrounding rural districts within the Kherson Oblast of southern Ukraine. This code is part of the national numbering plan administered by the Ukrainian State Centre of Radio Frequencies (UCRF) under the framework of ITU-T E.164. Hornostaivka is situated on the left bank of the Dnipro River, approximately 150 kilometers northeast of the regional capital, Kherson city. The code serves both fixed-line PSTN subscribers and, in some cases, fixed wireless terminals that are geographically tied to this locality.

Dialing Formats

When calling a Hornostaivka number from within Ukraine, subscribers must use the national trunk prefix 0 followed by the area code and the local subscriber number. The standard national format is:

• 0 5544 XX-XX-XX (for calls made within Ukraine)

For international callers, the Ukrainian country code +380 replaces the trunk prefix, resulting in the format:

• +380 5544 XX-XX-XX (for calls from abroad)

Local numbers within the 5544 area typically consist of five to seven digits, depending on the capacity of the local exchange. When dialing locally within Hornostaivka, the area code may be omitted, but for clarity and to accommodate mobile and VoIP users, it is recommended to always use the full national or international format.

Administrative and Jurisdictional Notes

The 5544 code is geographically allocated to the Hornostaivka Raion (district) of Kherson Oblast. This region has been affected by the ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine, and as a result, some fixed-line infrastructure may have been damaged or temporarily out of service. However, the numbering resource remains reserved for the area, and telecom operators are working to restore connectivity. Callers should be aware that network availability may vary, and alternative contact methods (e.g., mobile or VoIP) might be necessary in some cases.

Overlay and Number Portability

As of the current numbering plan, there is no overlay code for the 5544 area. Subscribers in Hornostaivka are assigned numbers exclusively under this code. However, Ukraine has implemented geographic number portability, allowing fixed-line users to retain their numbers when moving within the same geographic area, but not across different NDCs. This means that a number with the 5544 prefix is permanently associated with the Hornostaivka region for routing purposes.

Caller Instructions

For local callers within Ukraine: dial 0 5544 followed by the subscriber number. For international callers: dial the international access code (e.g., 00 from most countries) or the plus sign (+), then 380 5544 and the subscriber number. Ensure that you have the correct number of digits; if you encounter difficulties, verify the number with the recipient, as some local numbers may have been migrated to mobile networks due to infrastructure changes.
