Area Code 4868 – Illichivsk, Odesa

Geographic Coverage and Administrative Context

The Ukrainian national destination code 4868 is a geographic area code assigned to the city of Illichivsk (also known as Chornomorsk since 2016) within the Odesa Oblast of southwestern Ukraine. This code falls under the broader Odesa regional numbering plan, which is administered by the Ukrainian State Centre of Radio Frequencies and follows the ITU-T E.164 international standard. Illichivsk is a port city located on the Black Sea coast, approximately 20 kilometers southwest of Odesa, and serves as a significant maritime and industrial hub. The geographic area covered by the 4868 code includes the city proper and its immediate suburban settlements, but it does not extend to the entire Odesa region, which uses multiple other codes (e.g., 48 for Odesa city and surrounding areas).

Dialing Formats and Caller Instructions

For callers within Ukraine, reaching a landline in Illichivsk requires dialing the trunk prefix 0, followed by the area code 4868 and the subscriber number. The national significant number (NSN) for Illichivsk numbers is 9 digits, comprising the area code (4 digits) and a 5-digit local subscriber number. Thus, a typical national dialing format is: 0 4868 XX XXX (where X denotes a digit). For example, a local number might be 0 4868 2 34 56.

International callers must dial the Ukrainian country code +380, then the area code 4868 (without the leading zero), followed by the 5-digit subscriber number. The international format is: +380 4868 XX XXX. For instance, to call a landline in Illichivsk from abroad, one would dial +380 4868 2 34 56. It is crucial to omit the trunk prefix '0' when dialing from outside Ukraine.

Numbering Plan and Overlay Considerations

As of the current Ukrainian numbering plan, there are no overlay codes for Illichivsk; the 4868 code is exclusively assigned to this geographic area. However, due to the ongoing migration of fixed-line services to VoIP and the introduction of number portability, some numbers bearing the 4868 code may be served by alternative operators. Callers should be aware that the geographic association does not always guarantee the physical location of the called party, especially in a deregulated telecom market.

For local callers within Illichivsk, short-dialing (without the area code) may be possible for calls within the same exchange, but this is operator-dependent. For clarity and reliability, it is recommended to always use the full national or international format, especially for business communications.
