Area Code 4736 – Kaniv, Cherkasy

Overview of Area Code +380 4736

Area code +380 4736 is a geographic National Destination Code (NDC) assigned to the city of Kaniv and its surrounding district in the Cherkasy Oblast of central Ukraine. It is part of the national numbering plan administered by the Ukrainian State Centre of Radio Frequencies (UCRF) under the framework of ITU-T Recommendation E.164. The code is used for fixed-line PSTN services within the Kaniv administrative area.

Geographic Coverage and Administrative Jurisdiction

The code covers the city of Kaniv, which is situated on the Dnipro River, approximately 150 km southeast of Kyiv. Kaniv is known for the Taras Shevchenko National Reserve and the Kaniv Hydroelectric Power Plant. The service area includes the urban territory of Kaniv and several adjacent villages within the Kaniv Raion. As a geographic code, it is tied to a specific physical location, and the allocation follows the national numbering plan that divides Ukraine into approximately 700 local geographic zones.

Dialing Formats and Usage

For callers within Ukraine, the national trunk prefix 0 is used before the area code. Thus, to call a Kaniv fixed-line number from another Ukrainian city, you would dial: 0 4736 XX XX XX (where X represents the subscriber number digits). For international callers, the country code +380 replaces the trunk prefix, so the international format becomes: +380 4736 XX XX XX. The total number length after the country code is 9 digits, including the NDC and subscriber number. For example, a typical Kaniv number might be +380 4736 5 12 34.

Caller Instructions

Local callers within Kaniv can often dial the subscriber number directly without the area code, depending on the local network configuration. However, for clarity and consistency, it is recommended to always use the full national format. For callers from abroad, ensure you use the international access prefix of your country (e.g., 00 from most European countries, 011 from the US/Canada) followed by 380 and the area code without the leading zero. For example, from the US, you would dial: 011 380 4736 XX XX XX.

Overlay and Numbering Considerations

Currently, there is no overlay code for the Kaniv area; the 4736 code is exclusively used for this region. However, as with all geographic codes in Ukraine, number portability is not available for fixed-line services, meaning that if a subscriber moves to another geographic area, they must obtain a new number with the appropriate local code. The code is not used for mobile or VoIP services, which have their own non-geographic prefixes.
