Area Code 3558 – Shumsk, Ternopil

Geographic Overview

The +380 3558 prefix is a geographic National Destination Code (NDC) assigned to the fixed-line telephone network serving the town of Shumsk and its surrounding rural districts within the Ternopil Oblast of western Ukraine. Shumsk is a small administrative center located approximately 80 kilometers north of the regional capital, Ternopil, near the border with Rivne Oblast. The numbering area encompasses the urban settlement of Shumsk and several adjacent villages, all of which are served by the local PSTN infrastructure operated by the incumbent fixed-line provider, Ukrtelecom, as well as alternative operators that have been granted access to the local loop.

Dialing Formats

For callers within Ukraine, the national trunk prefix '0' must be dialed before the area code. Thus, a local call to a subscriber in Shumsk requires dialing 0 3558 followed by the subscriber's 5-digit local number, resulting in a total national significant number length of 9 digits (excluding the trunk prefix). For example, a local number 12345 would be dialed as 03558 12345 from any other region in Ukraine.

For international callers, the Ukrainian country code +380 is used, followed by the area code without the leading '0'. Therefore, the same subscriber would be reached by dialing +380 3558 12345. It is important to note that the area code 3558 is not an overlay; it is the sole geographic code for this specific exchange area.

Caller Instructions

Local callers within the Shumsk area may be able to dial the 5-digit subscriber number directly without the area code, depending on the specific local exchange configuration. However, for clarity and to avoid misdialing, it is recommended to always use the full national format, especially when calling from mobile phones or VoIP services. Foreign callers should replace the '+' with their international access code (e.g., '011' from the US/Canada, '00' from most European countries).

Regulatory and Technical Notes

As part of the Ukrainian numbering plan, geographic codes are assigned by the Ukrainian State Centre of Radio Frequencies (UCRF) under the National Commission for State Regulation of Communications and Informatization. The 3558 code is classified as a geographic number, meaning that the tariff for calls to this number is typically lower than calls to mobile or non-geographic numbers. Since the liberalization of the Ukrainian telecom market, subscribers in Shumsk may have the option to retain their fixed-line number when switching between operators that provide local loop access, a process known as fixed number portability (FNP).

For businesses or individuals considering a virtual presence in Shumsk, obtaining a +380 3558 number can be done through local telecom operators or authorized VoIP providers, though it is important to verify that the provider can assign a number from this specific geographic pool.
