Overview of Thailand's Mobile Prefix 6
In Thailand's national numbering plan, as administered by the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) under the ITU-T E.164 framework, the country calling code +66 is followed by a National Significant Number (NSN) of eight to nine digits for mobile services. The leading digit '6' is a non-geographic prefix allocated exclusively to mobile network operators (MNOs) and mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs). Unlike geographic area codes that correspond to specific provinces or cities, numbers beginning with +66 6 are location-independent and are assigned to cellular services nationwide.
Number Structure and Formatting
Thai mobile numbers using the 6 prefix consist of a total of nine digits after the country code. The format is +66 6X XXX XXXX, where the second digit (X) often indicates the specific operator or service provider. For example, +66 61 234 5678 is a valid mobile number. When dialing domestically, callers must include a leading '0' before the subscriber number, resulting in the format 06X XXX XXXX. This leading zero is dropped when dialing from abroad, and the country code +66 is used instead.
Operator Assignments and Portability
The '6' prefix is shared among several major Thai MNOs, including AIS, TrueMove H, and dtac, as well as MVNOs. However, due to mobile number portability (MNP), the prefix no longer guarantees a specific operator. Subscribers can retain their number when switching carriers, so the prefix should not be used as a definitive indicator of the network. For accurate routing, especially for SMS or voice services, real-time number portability databases are recommended.
Dialing Instructions
- Domestic calls (within Thailand): Dial 0 followed by the 9-digit mobile number, e.g., 06X XXX XXXX.
- International calls (from outside Thailand): Dial your country's exit code (e.g., 011 from the US, 00 from most European countries), then +66, followed by the 9-digit mobile number without the leading zero, e.g., +66 6X XXX XXXX.
- SMS and MMS: Use the same international format (+66 6X XXX XXXX) when sending from abroad.
Regulatory and Technical Notes
The NBTC has implemented a unified numbering plan to ensure sufficient capacity for the growing demand for mobile services. The '6' prefix is part of the 9-digit NSN range, which provides ample numbering resources for future expansion. All mobile numbers in Thailand are charged on a caller-pays basis for voice calls, and data services are billed according to the subscriber's plan. Emergency services (e.g., 191 for police, 1669 for medical) are reachable from any mobile phone, regardless of the prefix.
