Area Code 32 – Bienne/Neuchâtel/Soleure/Jura

Geographic Coverage and Administrative Jurisdiction

Swiss area code +41 32 is a geographic National Destination Code (NDC) assigned to the northwestern part of the country, encompassing the cantons of Bern (specifically the Bienne/Seeland region), Neuchâtel, Solothurn (parts), and Jura. The code serves the bilingual (French/German) area known as the 'Trois-Lacs' region and the Jura arc. Key cities include Biel/Bienne, Neuchâtel, La Chaux-de-Fonds, Delémont, Porrentruy, and Solothurn (partially). This code is administered by the Swiss Federal Office of Communications (OFCOM) and is used for fixed-line PSTN and VoIP services.

Dialing Formats and Caller Instructions

Within Switzerland, calls to numbers in the +41 32 area require trunk prefix 0 followed by the NDC and the local subscriber number, resulting in the national format 032 xxx xx xx. For international callers, the format is +41 32 xxx xx xx (or 0041 32 xxx xx xx from countries using international prefix 00). Local calls within the same NDC may be dialed using the full national number (including 032) as per Swiss regulatory rules; there is no separate local dialing code. Subscriber numbers are typically 7 digits long, making the complete international number 11 digits (including country code).

Overlay and Numbering Considerations

Currently, there is no overlay code for the 032 region; the code is exclusive to this geographic area. However, number portability is fully implemented in Switzerland, meaning that a fixed-line number with 032 may be ported to a different geographic location or even to a VoIP or mobile network, but the NDC remains unchanged. This can occasionally lead to a mismatch between the number's prefix and the actual physical location of the line, a factor to consider for businesses and callers.

Practical Usage and Examples

For a business in Biel/Bienne, the international presentation would be +41 32 555 01 23. A caller from Zurich would dial 032 555 01 23, while a caller from Germany would dial 0041 32 555 01 23. When dialing from a mobile phone in Switzerland, it is essential to include the trunk prefix 0 (i.e., 032...). For VoIP users, the same rules apply as for PSTN numbers.

Given the bilingual nature of the region, public services and businesses often provide information in both French and German. The area is known for watchmaking, microtechnology, and logistics, with many international companies headquartered there.
