Geographic Overview of Area Code +386 48
The Slovenian area code +386 48 is a geographic National Destination Code (NDC) assigned to the city of Kranj and its surrounding municipalities within the Gorenjska statistical region. Kranj, the fourth-largest city in Slovenia, serves as the administrative, economic, and cultural hub of the Upper Carniola region. The code covers the urban area of Kranj, along with nearby settlements such as Šenčur, Preddvor, and parts of the Škofja Loka hills. This allocation follows the ITU-T E.164 numbering plan, ensuring unambiguous international dialing.
Dialing Formats and Usage
When calling a fixed-line subscriber in Kranj from abroad, the international format is +386 48 XXX XXX (or +38648XXXXXXX when the subscriber number is concatenated). From within Slovenia, callers must use the trunk prefix 0 followed by the area code and subscriber number: 04 8XXX XXX (note: the leading 0 is dropped when dialing from outside the country). The national significant number (NSN) length is eight digits, including the NDC.
For local calls within Kranj, the full national format (including the area code) is still required, as Slovenia does not permit abbreviated local dialing for fixed-line numbers. This is a common practice in countries with relatively small geographic numbering areas.
Administrative and Regulatory Context
The numbering resources for Kranj are managed by the Agency for Communication Networks and Services of the Republic of Slovenia (AKOS). The code is classified as a geographic number, meaning it is tied to a physical location. However, with the advent of VoIP and number portability, subscribers may retain their +386 48 number even if they relocate within Slovenia, provided the service provider supports nomadic use. Nevertheless, the number remains associated with Kranj for regulatory and statistical purposes.
