Area Code 842 – Ulyanovsk

Overview of Area Code +7 842

Area code +7 842 is a geographic National Destination Code (NDC) assigned to the Ulyanovsk region of the Russian Federation. It covers the administrative center of Ulyanovsk and its surrounding districts, including cities such as Dimitrovgrad, Inza, Barysh, and Novoulyanovsk. The code is part of the Russian numbering plan, which uses the international country code +7 (shared with Kazakhstan). Calls to this region require the full international format: +7 842 XXX-XX-XX for callers outside Russia, and 8 842 XXX-XX-XX for domestic long-distance calls within Russia.

Geographic Coverage and Administration

The Ulyanovsk region is located in the Volga Federal District, approximately 900 kilometers southeast of Moscow. The area code serves both fixed-line PSTN subscribers and some VoIP services that are geographically tied to the region. The primary city, Ulyanovsk (formerly Simbirsk), is a major industrial and cultural hub on the Volga River. The region is divided into several administrative districts, all of which fall under the +7 842 NDC. This includes the cities of Dimitrovgrad (a major nuclear research center), Inza, and Barysh, as well as numerous rural settlements.

Dialing Formats and Instructions

For callers within Russia, dialing a local number in the Ulyanovsk area requires the trunk prefix 8, followed by the area code 842 and the seven-digit subscriber number. For example, to call a landline in Ulyanovsk from Moscow, you would dial: 8 842 XXX-XX-XX. For international callers, the format is +7 842 XXX-XX-XX (or 007 842 XXX-XX-XX if using the older international prefix). When dialing locally within the same area code, it is possible to omit the area code and dial only the seven-digit number, depending on the local telecom operator's configuration. However, for clarity and to avoid misdialing, it is recommended to always use the full national or international format.

Numbering and Overlay Considerations

Subscriber numbers within the +7 842 area code are seven digits long, and the total length of an international number is 11 digits (including the +7 country code). As of the latest numbering plan updates, there is no overlay code for the Ulyanovsk region; the +7 842 code remains the sole geographic NDC for the area. This means that number portability within the region is managed by the national regulator, and subscribers may retain their numbers when switching between fixed-line operators, as long as the service remains within the same geographic area.

Practical Guidance for Callers

If you are calling from a foreign country, always replace the international access code (e.g., 00 from Europe, 011 from North America) with the plus sign (+) when using a mobile phone, or dial the appropriate international prefix followed by 7 842. For example, from the United States, you would dial 011 7 842 XXX-XX-XX. From the UK, it would be 00 7 842 XXX-XX-XX. Be aware that calls to Russian landlines are typically charged at higher rates than domestic calls, and rates may vary depending on your service provider. For businesses, it is advisable to display the full international format on websites and marketing materials to ensure accessibility for global customers.
