The Republic of Mari El is a region with a rich cultural heritage, and its telecommunications infrastructure is managed under the Russian national numbering plan, which follows ITU-T E.164 recommendations. The area code 836 is part of the Russian geographic numbering zone, and numbers under this code are allocated to fixed-line operators providing PSTN and VoIP services. The code is not portable to mobile networks; mobile numbers in Russia use separate non-geographic prefixes (e.g., 9xx).

Caller Instructions

For callers within Russia, it is essential to use the trunk prefix 8 when dialing any Russian geographic number, including those in Mari El. For international callers, the process is to dial the international access code (e.g., 00 from most countries), followed by 7, then 836 and the local number. No additional area or city codes are required, as 836 is the complete NDC for the region.

It is also worth noting that Russia has implemented overlay plans in some regions, but as of the latest updates, the Republic of Mari El uses a single area code without overlays. Therefore, local calls within the republic require only the 7-digit subscriber number when dialed from a phone in the same locality, but for clarity and to avoid confusion, it is recommended to always use the full national format.

Understanding these dialing rules ensures seamless connectivity with businesses, government offices, and residents in the Republic of Mari El.
