Area Code 7222 – Semey

Geographic Overview

The area code 7222 is a geographic National Destination Code (NDC) assigned to the city of Semey (formerly known as Semipalatinsk) in the Republic of Kazakhstan. Although the country code +7 is shared with Russia, this code is part of the Kazakh numbering plan, administered by the Communications and Information Committee of the Ministry of Digital Development, Innovations and Aerospace Industry of Kazakhstan. Semey is located in the eastern part of Kazakhstan, along the Irtysh River, and serves as the administrative center of the Abai Region. The city is a significant industrial, educational, and cultural hub, with a population of over 300,000.

Dialing Formats

For local calls within Semey, subscribers typically dial the seven-digit local number without the area code. However, for calls from other regions of Kazakhstan or from abroad, the full national or international format is required.

• National format (within Kazakhstan): 8 (7222) XXX-XX-XX
• International format (from outside Kazakhstan): +7 7222 XXX-XX-XX

For example, a local number in Semey might be 123-45-67. To call this number from Almaty, you would dial 8 7222 123-45-67. From the United States, you would dial 011 7 7222 123-45-67.

Geographic Coverage and Jurisdiction

The 7222 code covers the city of Semey and its immediate surrounding areas within the Abai Region. This includes the urban districts of the city and nearby settlements that fall under the city's administrative jurisdiction. The code is exclusively for fixed-line (PSTN) services, including traditional analog lines, ISDN, and VoIP services that are registered with a fixed geographic address in the area.

Overlay and Numbering Considerations

As of the latest updates, there is no overlay code for Semey; the 7222 code is the sole geographic code for the city. The local number length is seven digits, and the total length of a national significant number (NSN) is ten digits (including the area code). The numbering capacity is sufficient for the current population, but future expansions may be considered if demand increases.

Caller Instructions

For callers within Kazakhstan: When dialing from a mobile phone, you can use the national format with the leading '8' or '+7'. For example, to call a Semey landline from a Kazakh mobile, you can dial 8 7222 123-45-67 or +7 7222 123-45-67. The latter is recommended for international interoperability.

For callers from outside Kazakhstan: Dial your country's international access prefix (e.g., 011 from North America, 00 from most European countries), followed by the country code 7, then the area code 7222, and the seven-digit local number. For instance, from the UK, you would dial 00 7 7222 123-45-67.

It is important to note that calls to Semey from international locations are subject to international tariffs, which vary by service provider. Always verify the number with the recipient to ensure accurate dialing.
