Overview of Romania's +40 772 Mobile Prefix
The +40 772 prefix is a non-geographic mobile number range assigned to Digi Mobil, the mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) division of RCS & RDS, one of Romania's leading telecommunications groups. As a non-geographic prefix, 772 numbers are not tied to any specific city or region; they can be used anywhere in Romania and are primarily intended for mobile voice, SMS, and data services.
Number Format and Dialing Instructions
Romanian mobile numbers, including those starting with 772, follow the national numbering plan defined by the National Authority for Management and Regulation in Communications (ANCOM). The full national number is 10 digits long, beginning with the prefix '07' followed by the network code (72) and the subscriber number (7 digits). Thus, a typical Digi Mobil number looks like: 0722 xxx xxx (national format) or +40 722 xxx xxx (international format).
- Local callers (within Romania): Dial 0722 xxx xxx (omit the leading zero when calling from abroad).
- International callers: Dial +40 722 xxx xxx or 0040 722 xxx xxx depending on the country's exit code.
For example, a complete international number would appear as +40 722 123 456.
Technical and Regulatory Details
Digi Mobil operates as an MVNO on the network infrastructure of other Romanian MNOs (such as Vodafone and Orange) via national roaming agreements. This allows RCS & RDS to offer competitive mobile services bundled with its fixed-line internet and cable TV offerings. The 772 prefix is part of the '72' numbering block assigned to Digi Mobil, but due to mobile number portability (MNP), a number starting with 772 may have been ported to another operator, and conversely, numbers from other operators may now be served by Digi Mobil. Therefore, the prefix alone does not guarantee the current operator; verification via the ANCOM database or a quick call is recommended.
International SMS and Voice Routing
For international SMS and voice calls, the +40 772 number is routed through the Romanian PSTN and mobile networks. SMS messages sent to a +40 772 number from abroad should be addressed to the full international format, e.g., +40 722 xxx xxx. Standard international messaging rates apply, and the recipient is charged according to their domestic plan. As with all Romanian mobile numbers, 772 numbers support full international roaming, enabling use across the EU and other countries under the 'Roam Like at Home' regulation within the EU/EEA.
Practical Considerations
When dialing a 772 number, callers should be aware that the subscriber may have opted for a number from a different operator due to portability. Additionally, some services (e.g., premium-rate numbers, short codes) are not available on mobile prefixes. For businesses, verifying the current operator of a 772 number can be important for routing or cost purposes, especially if they rely on operator-specific services. Overall, the +40 772 prefix is a reliable and widely used mobile range in Romania, offering full functionality for personal and business communications.
