Overview of Romania's +40 770 Mobile Prefix
The +40 770 prefix is a non-geographic mobile number range assigned to Digi Mobil, the mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) arm of RCS & RDS, one of Romania's leading telecommunications providers. Unlike geographic area codes, which are tied to specific cities or regions, the 770 prefix is used exclusively for mobile services, enabling subscribers to make and receive calls anywhere in Romania and abroad. This prefix is part of Romania's national numbering plan, which adheres to ITU-T E.164 standards, and is allocated for mobile services under the oversight of the National Authority for Administration and Regulation in Communications (ANCOM).
Formatting and Dialing Procedures
Romanian mobile numbers, including those with the 770 prefix, consist of 10 digits in the national format, beginning with the digit '0' followed by the prefix and the subscriber's unique number. For example, a Digi Mobil number might appear as 0770 123 456 in national format. When dialing from abroad, the leading '0' is omitted, and the country code +40 is used, resulting in the international format +40 770 123 456. This format is essential for international callers, as it ensures proper routing through the global PSTN and mobile networks.
For local callers within Romania, dialing the full 10-digit number (including the leading '0') is required, even when calling from a landline or another mobile phone. There are no local area codes to consider, as the prefix is non-geographic. Calls to 770 numbers are treated as mobile-to-mobile or mobile-to-landline calls, and tariffs depend on the caller's operator and plan.
Number Portability and Routing
Romania implemented mobile number portability (MNP) in 2008, allowing subscribers to retain their phone numbers when switching operators. As a result, a number starting with 770 may not always be actively used on the Digi Mobil network; it could have been ported to another operator. Conversely, subscribers from other operators may have ported their numbers to Digi Mobil, resulting in a different prefix. When routing calls, networks use a central database to determine the current operator, ensuring that calls reach the correct subscriber regardless of the original prefix. This means that the 770 prefix is not a definitive indicator of the current network, but it does reflect the original allocation.
Services and Usage
Digi Mobil offers a range of prepaid and postpaid plans, including voice, SMS, and data services. The 770 prefix is used for all types of mobile subscriptions, including personal and business lines. As an MVNO, Digi Mobil operates on the network infrastructure of other operators (such as Vodafone or Orange) but provides its own branding and customer service. This allows RCS & RDS to offer competitive pricing, particularly for bundled services with its fixed-line internet and cable TV offerings. For international callers, dialing a 770 number from abroad incurs standard international mobile tariffs, which vary by country and operator. It is advisable to check with your service provider for specific rates.
In summary, the +40 770 prefix is a vital part of Romania's mobile numbering landscape, serving as a gateway to Digi Mobil's subscriber base. Understanding its format and dialing procedures ensures seamless connectivity for both local and international callers.
