📍 Geographic Location of Prahova
Geographic Coverage and Administrative Jurisdiction
The +40 244 country-code/area-code combination is the geographic National Destination Code (NDC) assigned to the landline telephone network of Prahova County, Romania. Administratively, this code serves the central-southern part of the county, with Ploiești as the principal city and the seat of Prahova County. The area code covers the municipality of Ploiești and its metropolitan area, including localities such as Băicoi, Boldești-Scăeni, Câmpina, Mizil, Sinaia, and Vălenii de Munte. Geographically, the region extends from the southern plains into the Carpathian foothills, encompassing both densely populated urban centers and rural communities.
Dialing Formats and Numbering Structure
In the national dialing format, subscribers within Romania dial 0244 XXX XXX (the trunk prefix '0' followed by the NDC '244' and a seven-digit subscriber number). When calling from abroad, the international format is +40 244 XXX XXX, where the leading '0' is omitted. The total length of a Romanian geographic number, including the NDC, is nine digits (excluding the international access code). This structure complies with ITU-T E.164 recommendations, ensuring unambiguous global routing.
Overlay and Numbering Plan Considerations
Currently, there is no overlay code for the Prahova area; the 244 NDC is exclusively assigned to this geographic region. However, due to the increasing demand for telecommunication services, the national regulatory authority (ANCOM) periodically reviews numbering resources. Subscribers in Prahova may have the option to retain their existing numbers when switching between fixed-line operators, a process known as number portability. This does not alter the geographic significance of the prefix, which remains tied to the physical location of the line.
Caller Instructions
- Local callers within Prahova: Dial the full national number, including the trunk prefix: 0244 XXX XXX.
- Callers from other Romanian regions: Use the same national format: 0244 XXX XXX.
- International callers: Dial your country's international access code (e.g., 00 or +), then 40 244 XXX XXX.
When calling from a mobile phone in Romania, it is essential to include the trunk prefix '0' even when dialing a landline in the same area, as mobile networks require the full national number for proper routing. For callers from abroad, the plus sign (+) is recommended to ensure correct international dialing from any network.
