Overview of Romania's +40 079 Mobile Prefix
The +40 079 prefix is a non-geographic mobile allocation within Romania's national numbering plan, administered by the National Authority for Management and Regulation in Communications (ANCOM). Unlike geographic area codes tied to specific cities or regions, 079 numbers are location-independent and assigned to Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) and Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) licensed to provide public mobile services. These numbers are primarily used for voice calls, SMS, and mobile data services, and they are fully portable across Romanian mobile carriers, meaning a subscriber can retain their 079 number when switching providers.
Technical Format and Dialing Procedures
Romanian mobile numbers, including those beginning with 079, follow the E.164 international standard. The complete international format is +40 79X XXX XXX, where the national significant number (NSN) is 9 digits long (starting with 79). When dialing domestically, callers must include the trunk prefix '0' before the 079 code, resulting in the format 079X XXX XXX. For example, a typical Romanian mobile number might be +40 791 234 567, which would be dialed as 0791 234 567 from within Romania. International callers should drop the leading '0' and use the +40 country code.
Regulatory and Routing Considerations
The 079 prefix is part of a broader range of mobile codes (e.g., 070, 072, 073, 074, 075, 076, 077, 078) that ANCOM has allocated to mobile services. Because these numbers are non-geographic, they are not tied to any physical location, making them ideal for individuals and businesses that require a consistent point of contact regardless of their whereabouts. Calls to 079 numbers are typically charged at mobile rates, which may vary depending on the caller's network and tariff plan. For businesses, using 079 numbers can be advantageous for customer outreach, as they are widely recognized as mobile numbers in Romania and are often included in unlimited calling bundles offered by mobile operators.
International Access and Roaming
When calling a Romanian 079 number from abroad, international callers must use the +40 country code followed by the 9-digit number, omitting the leading '0'. For instance, a caller in the United States would dial 011 40 791 234 567. Conversely, when a Romanian subscriber with a 079 number travels internationally, they can receive calls on their number using standard international roaming agreements. The number remains reachable as long as the subscriber's home network has a roaming arrangement with a local carrier in the visited country. It is important to note that while number portability allows users to switch carriers, the prefix does not necessarily indicate the current operator; therefore, callers should not assume a specific carrier based solely on the 079 prefix.
