Area Code 8622 – Surigao del Sur

Overview of Area Code 8622

Area code 8622 is a geographic National Destination Code (NDC) assigned to the province of Surigao del Sur in the Philippines. It is part of the country's open dialing plan, where the NDC is dialed after the international access code and country code. For domestic calls within the Philippines, the trunk prefix 0 is used before the area code, while international callers omit the leading 0 and dial +63 8622 followed by the subscriber number.

Geographic Coverage and Jurisdiction

The code serves the entire province of Surigao del Sur, which is located in the Caraga Region (Region XIII) on the northeastern coast of Mindanao. Major cities and municipalities covered include Tandag City (the provincial capital), Bislig City, Cantilan, Lianga, and San Francisco. The area code is administered under the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) of the Philippines and is allocated for fixed-line (PSTN) services, including both traditional copper lines and fixed wireless or VoIP-based local exchange services.

Dialing Formats

International dialing: To call a fixed line in Surigao del Sur from abroad, dial your country's exit code, then 63 (Philippines country code), then 8622, and finally the local subscriber number (typically 7 digits). For example, a call to a number in Tandag City would be formatted as +63 8622 XXX XXXX.

Domestic long-distance dialing: From other parts of the Philippines, dial 0 then 8622 and the subscriber number: 0 8622 XXX XXXX.

Local dialing: Within the same area code, callers may often omit the area code and dial only the 7-digit subscriber number, though this depends on the specific local exchange and the subscriber's telephone service provider.

Overlay and Numbering Considerations

As of the latest NTC assignments, area code 8622 is not subject to an overlay; it is the sole geographic code for Surigao del Sur. However, with the migration to IP-based networks, some fixed-line operators may assign numbers from this code to VoIP services that are not strictly location-bound, but the NDC remains geographically associated for routing and emergency services.

Caller Instructions

• For local callers: If you are within Surigao del Sur and dialing a fixed line, you may dial the 7-digit number directly. If you are outside the province, use the national trunk prefix 0.
• For international callers: Always replace the trunk prefix 0 with the country code +63. Ensure you have the correct exit code for your country (e.g., 011 from the US/Canada, 00 from many European countries).

Understanding the correct dialing format ensures seamless connectivity to businesses, government offices, and residents in Surigao del Sur. For the most current number allocations and porting information, consult the NTC or your service provider.
