Area Code 744 – Larkana

Overview of Area Code 744 (Larkana, Pakistan)

Area code 744 is a geographic National Destination Code (NDC) assigned to the city of Larkana and its surrounding administrative areas in the Sindh province of Pakistan. It is part of the national numbering plan under the ITU-T E.164 recommendation, managed by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA). Larkana is a major city in northern Sindh, known for its historical and cultural significance, and is the gateway to the archaeological site of Mohenjo-daro.

Geographic Coverage and Administrative Jurisdiction

The 744 code covers Larkana District, which includes the city of Larkana itself, as well as nearby towns and union councils. The district is bordered by the Indus River to the east and the Kirthar Range to the west. Key localities served by this code include Larkana City, Dokri, Bakrani, and Ratodero. The area is part of the Larkana Division, which also encompasses other districts, but the 744 code is specifically allocated to the Larkana exchange area.

Dialing Formats and Caller Instructions

For callers within Pakistan, dialing a landline number in Larkana requires the national trunk prefix 0, followed by the area code 744, and then the subscriber's 7-digit local number. For example, to call a number in Larkana from elsewhere in Pakistan, you would dial: 0 744 XXXXXXX (where XXXXXXX is the 7-digit local number).

For international callers, the format is: +92 744 XXXXXXX (or 0092 744 XXXXXXX from many countries). The leading zero of the national prefix is dropped when using the international format. For instance, if the local number is 1234567, the international dialing format would be +92 744 1234567.

Local calls within Larkana (same area code) may be dialed using just the 7-digit number without the area code, depending on the operator's dialing plan. However, for clarity and to avoid misdialing, it is recommended to always use the full national format.

Overlay Considerations and Numbering Plan

As of the latest PTA updates, there is no overlay code for Larkana; the 744 code is unique to this geographic region. Subscriber numbers are 7 digits long, resulting in a total number length of 10 digits when including the area code (excluding the trunk prefix). This is consistent with Pakistan's national numbering plan for fixed-line services.

Service and Usage Notes

The 744 code is used for traditional PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) services, as well as for fixed wireless and VoIP services that are geographically tied to the Larkana exchange. Businesses and residents in the area rely on this code for their primary fixed-line communications. When calling from abroad, it is essential to check with your service provider for any international dialing restrictions or additional charges that may apply to Pakistan.

For travelers or businesses establishing a presence in Larkana, understanding the correct dialing format ensures seamless connectivity with local clients and partners.
