Area Code 282 – Xai-Xai

Geographic Overview

The +258 282 area code is a geographic National Destination Code (NDC) assigned to the city of Xai-Xai, the capital of Gaza Province in southern Mozambique. Xai-Xai lies approximately 200 kilometers northeast of Maputo, along the Limpopo River, and serves as a key administrative and commercial hub for the region. The code covers the city itself and its surrounding districts, including Praia do Xai-Xai, a popular coastal resort area.

Dialing Formats

For international callers, the full number format is +258 282 XXX XXX (where X represents the subscriber's local number). When dialing from within Mozambique, callers must use the trunk prefix 0 before the area code: 0 282 XXX XXX. For example, a local call from Maputo to Xai-Xai would be dialed as 0 282 XXX XXX, while an international call from abroad would be dialed as +258 282 XXX XXX.

Caller Instructions

• Local callers (within Mozambique): Dial the trunk prefix 0, followed by the area code 282 and the subscriber number. Do not include the country code.
• International callers: Dial the international access prefix (e.g., 00 from most countries), then Mozambique's country code 258, followed by the area code 282 (without the leading 0) and the subscriber number.

Regulatory and Technical Notes

Mozambique's national numbering plan is administered by the Instituto Nacional das Comunicações de Moçambique (INCM). Geographic area codes are assigned to fixed-line services, typically provided by Telecomunicações de Moçambique (TDM), the incumbent fixed-line operator. As with many African nations, mobile penetration is high, and fixed-line usage is limited. The 282 code is exclusively for fixed-line services; mobile numbers in Mozambique use distinct prefixes (e.g., 82, 84, 86) and are non-geographic.

There are no known overlay codes for Xai-Xai; the 282 code remains the sole geographic code for the area. However, number portability may allow subscribers to retain their numbers when changing operators, but fixed-line portability is less common than mobile. Callers should be aware that calling fixed-line numbers in Xai-Xai may incur international tariffs if calling from outside Mozambique, and local rates apply within the country.
