Area Code 26 – Nampula

Geographic Overview and Administrative Coverage

The area code 26 is a geographic National Destination Code (NDC) assigned to the province of Nampula, located in northern Mozambique. This code covers the provincial capital, also named Nampula, along with surrounding districts and municipalities within the province's administrative jurisdiction. As a geographic code, it is tied to a specific PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) exchange area, meaning that the number is associated with a fixed-line connection physically located within this region.

Dialing Formats and Number Structure

When dialing a fixed-line number in Nampula from within Mozambique, subscribers must use the full national trunk prefix 0 followed by the area code 26 and the subscriber's seven-digit local number. For example, a local number such as 21 34567 would be dialed as 026 2134567 from other parts of the country. From abroad, callers must replace the leading zero with Mozambique's country calling code +258, resulting in the international format +258 26 2134567. It is important to note that the area code is an integral part of the national numbering plan and must always be included when dialing from a mobile phone or from outside the fixed-line's local calling area.

Overlays and Numbering Plan Considerations

As of the latest ITU-T E.164 national numbering plan updates, there are no overlay codes currently active in the Nampula area. This means that the 26 code is exclusively assigned to fixed-line services within the province. However, due to the increasing demand for telecommunication services, the regulatory authority, Instituto Nacional das Comunicações de Moçambique (INCM), may introduce additional geographic codes or overlay strategies in the future. Subscribers and businesses should verify the current dialing procedures with their service provider to ensure accurate call routing.

Caller Instructions and Usage

For local callers within Nampula, it is common practice to dial only the seven-digit subscriber number when calling another fixed-line in the same exchange area. However, for calls from other provinces or from mobile networks, the full national format with the trunk prefix and area code is mandatory. International callers must always use the country code and drop the leading zero. This geographic code is primarily used by residential and business landlines, including government offices, commercial enterprises, and public services operating in the region. When placing calls to Nampula, it is advisable to confirm the correct number format with the recipient, especially if the number has been ported or if the caller is using VoIP services that may require additional dialing rules.
