Area Code 2422 – Ulgii, Bayan-Ulgii

Overview of Area Code 2422

Area code 2422 is a geographic National Destination Code (NDC) assigned to the city of Ulgii, the administrative center of Bayan-Ulgii Province in western Mongolia. This code is used for fixed-line (PSTN) services within the city and its immediate surroundings. Bayan-Ulgii is notable for its predominantly Kazakh population and is situated near the borders with Russia and China, making it a unique cultural and economic hub in the Altai region.

Geographic Coverage and Administrative Jurisdiction

The 2422 code covers the urban area of Ulgii and the adjacent settlements that fall under the jurisdiction of the Bayan-Ulgii provincial government. As a provincial capital, Ulgii hosts key administrative offices, commercial centers, and public services. The code is allocated exclusively for fixed-line connections, and it is not used for mobile services, which operate under separate non-geographic prefixes.

Dialing Formats and Caller Instructions

For callers within Mongolia, dialing a local number in Ulgii requires the trunk prefix 0, followed by the area code 2422 and the subscriber's 6-digit number. For example, to call a fixed line in Ulgii from elsewhere in Mongolia, you would dial: 0 2422 XXX XXX.

International callers must use Mongolia's country calling code +976, followed by the area code without the leading trunk prefix. Thus, an international call to Ulgii would be formatted as: +976 2422 XXX XXX. For instance, if the local number is 123456, the international format would be +976 2422 123456.

Overlay and Numbering Plan Considerations

Currently, there is no overlay code for Ulgii; the 2422 code is the sole geographic code for the city. However, as Mongolia's telecommunications network evolves, the Communications Regulatory Commission of Mongolia (CRC) may introduce additional digits or overlay codes to meet growing demand. Subscribers should be aware that while fixed-line numbers are generally tied to a physical location, VoIP services may allow users to obtain a 2422 number without being physically present in Ulgii, though this is subject to regulatory approval.

Practical Tips for Callers

• When calling from a mobile phone within Mongolia, you can use the same format as from a fixed line: 0 2422 XXX XXX.
• If you are traveling in the region and need to reach a local business, ensure you have the full 6-digit subscriber number, as numbers may not be listed in international directories.
• For international callers, note that Mongolia uses the +976 country code, and the area code is always dialed without the leading zero.

Understanding the correct dialing format ensures seamless connectivity with businesses and residents in Ulgii, whether you are placing a call from within Mongolia or from abroad.
