Area Code 1562 – Undurkhaan city, Khentii

Overview of Area Code 1562

Area code 1562 is a geographic destination code within the Mongolian national numbering plan, assigned to the city of Undurkhaan (also spelled Öndörkhaan), the administrative center of Khentii Province in eastern Mongolia. This code is used for fixed-line (PSTN) services within the city and its immediate surrounding areas. As with all Mongolian geographic codes, 1562 is part of the E.164 international numbering structure, and its use is governed by the Communications Regulatory Commission of Mongolia.

Geographic Coverage and Administration

Undurkhaan is the capital of Khentii Province, a region historically significant as the birthplace of Genghis Khan. The area code 1562 covers the urban and suburban districts of Undurkhaan, including the central business district and residential zones. The code is allocated exclusively for fixed-line connections, meaning that calls to 1562 numbers terminate on traditional copper or fiber-optic lines, not on mobile networks.

Dialing Formats and Instructions

For callers within Mongolia, the national trunk prefix 0 must be dialed before the area code. Thus, a local call from another province to an Undurkhaan number would be dialed as 0 1562 XXX XX, where the subscriber number is typically 6 digits long, resulting in a total national significant number of 8 digits (excluding the trunk prefix). Internationally, callers must use Mongolia's country code +976, followed directly by the area code without the leading zero. For example, a caller from the United States would dial +976 1562 XXX XX.

When dialing within Undurkhaan itself, local calls may be made using only the 6-digit subscriber number, omitting the area code. However, for clarity and to avoid misdialing, it is recommended to use the full national format, especially when calling from mobile phones.

Overlay and Numbering Considerations

As of the latest updates, there is no overlay code for Undurkhaan; 1562 remains the sole geographic code for the city. However, due to the growth of VoIP and mobile services, the distinction between geographic and non-geographic numbers is becoming less relevant for end users. Nevertheless, the 1562 code is strictly associated with the geographic location of Undurkhaan, and any number bearing this prefix is subject to the regulatory framework for fixed-line services.

Practical Guidance for Callers

For local callers within Mongolia, always include the trunk prefix 0 when dialing from a different area code or from a mobile phone. For international callers, replace the leading zero with +976. It is also important to note that while many Mongolian fixed-line numbers are being migrated to VoIP infrastructure, the dialing format remains unchanged. Always verify the current number length with your service provider, as numbering plan changes may occur.
