Overview of Moldova's +373 78 Mobile Prefix
The +373 78 prefix is a non-geographic mobile numbering range assigned within the Republic of Moldova's national numbering plan. Unlike geographic area codes tied to specific cities or regions, the 78 prefix is allocated to mobile network operators (MNOs) and mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) providing cellular services across the entire country. This means that a number beginning with +373 78 is not associated with a fixed location; the subscriber can be located anywhere in Moldova, and the number remains valid even when roaming internationally.
Technical Formatting and Dialing Procedures
Moldovan mobile numbers, including those under the 78 prefix, follow the ITU-T E.164 international standard. The complete international format is +373 78XXXXXX, where the country code is +373, the national destination code (NDC) is 78, and the subscriber number is six digits long (indicated by XXXXXX). Thus, the total length of a Moldovan mobile number is 8 digits after the country code, excluding the leading trunk prefix.
When dialing from within Moldova, you must use the national trunk prefix '0' before the NDC. For example, to call a 78 number domestically, you would dial: 0 78 XXXXXX. From abroad, you would dial: +373 78 XXXXXX (or the international access code of your country, followed by 373 78 XXXXXX).
Number Portability and Routing
Moldova implemented mobile number portability (MNP), allowing subscribers to retain their 78 numbers when switching between mobile operators. As a result, the 78 prefix does not permanently identify a specific operator; it only indicates that the number was originally allocated to the mobile service category. Routing of calls and SMS to ported numbers is handled by a central database, ensuring seamless connectivity regardless of the current network.
International Calling and SMS
For international callers, dialing +373 78 XXXXXX will connect to the subscriber's mobile device. International SMS messages should also be addressed to +373 78 XXXXXX. When roaming abroad, the subscriber receives calls and messages on the same number, with applicable roaming charges determined by their home operator's agreements.
Regulatory and Usage Notes
The 78 prefix is part of Moldova's national numbering plan administered by the National Regulatory Agency for Electronic Communications and Postal Services (ANRCETI). It is used exclusively for mobile services, including voice, SMS, and mobile data. There are no special tariffs associated with the prefix itself; charges depend on the subscriber's plan and the operator. For businesses, using a 78 number can be a strategic choice to appear mobile-friendly and accessible, but it does not imply any geographic presence.
