Area Code 294 – Taraclia

The +373 294 area code is the geographic National Destination Code (NDC) for Taraclia, a city and administrative center in the Taraclia District of southern Moldova. This numbering area is part of the national telephone numbering plan, which follows the ITU-T E.164 recommendation. The code is used for fixed-line (PSTN) services within the Taraclia region, which includes the city itself and the surrounding localities. Taraclia is notable for its significant Bulgarian ethnic community, and the region maintains strong cultural ties to Bulgaria.

Geographic Coverage and Administrative Jurisdiction

The +373 294 prefix is assigned to the Taraclia District, which borders Ukraine to the south and is situated in the historical region of Budjak. The primary city served is Taraclia, which acts as the administrative and economic hub of the district. Other localities within the district, such as Albota de Jos, Albota de Sus, and Tvardița, may also be covered under this code, depending on the specific network configuration of the national operator. The district is part of the Republic of Moldova, and its numbering is managed by the National Regulatory Agency for Electronic Communications and Postal Services (ANRCETI).

Dialing Formats and Caller Instructions

For callers within Moldova, the national dialing format requires the trunk prefix '0' followed by the area code and the subscriber number. For example, to call a fixed line in Taraclia from Chișinău, you would dial: 0 294 XX XX XX. The subscriber number length in this area is typically seven digits, but it may vary; always check with your provider if you are unsure.

For international callers, the format is: +373 294 XX XX XX (or +373 294 XXX XXX depending on the exact number length). The leading '0' is omitted when dialing from abroad. For instance, a caller from the United States would dial: 011 373 294 XX XX XX, while a caller from the United Kingdom would dial: 00 373 294 XX XX XX.

Overlay and Numbering Considerations

Currently, there is no overlay code for the Taraclia area; the 294 code remains the sole geographic NDC for this region. However, as Moldova continues to modernize its telecommunications infrastructure, the transition to IP-based networks may affect number portability and routing. Fixed-line numbers in Moldova are not portable across different geographic areas, but they may be portable between operators within the same area. For VoIP users, it is essential to ensure that the service provider supports the correct routing for geographic numbers to avoid misdialing.

When dialing from a mobile phone within Moldova, the same national format applies. It is important to note that calls to geographic numbers from mobile networks are typically charged at a higher rate than on-net calls, and international rates apply when calling from abroad. Always confirm the current tariff with your operator.
