Area Code 262 – Singerei

Overview of Area Code +373 262

Area code 262 is a geographic National Destination Code (NDC) within the Republic of Moldova's national numbering plan, conforming to ITU-T E.164. It serves the northern central region of the country, specifically the city of Singerei and its surrounding administrative district. The code is assigned to fixed-line PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) services, including traditional copper lines and, in many cases, VoIP-based fixed telephony that retains geographic numbering.

Geographic Coverage and Jurisdiction

The 262 area code covers the Singerei District (raion), which is located approximately 90 kilometers north of the capital, Chisinau. Key localities within this numbering area include the municipality of Singerei itself, as well as smaller communes and villages such as Birnova, Pepeni, and Cotiujenii Mici. The district is known for its agricultural production and is an important regional administrative center.

Dialing Formats and Procedures

Understanding the correct dialing sequence is essential for both domestic and international callers.

• Domestic calls (within Moldova): To call a fixed line in Singerei from another Moldovan city or region, dial the trunk prefix 0, followed by the area code 262 and the subscriber number. The subscriber number typically consists of 5 to 6 digits. The complete domestic format is: 0 262 XXX XXX.
• International calls (from outside Moldova): Callers should dial the international access prefix of their country (e.g., 00 from most European countries, 011 from the US/Canada), followed by Moldova's country code +373, then the area code 262 (without the leading trunk prefix 0), and the subscriber number. The international format is: +373 262 XXX XXX.

Overlays and Numbering Plan Considerations

As of the latest ITU-T and Moldovan regulatory updates, the 262 area code does not have an overlay code. The numbering plan is closed, meaning the trunk prefix 0 is used for all domestic long-distance calls. When dialing from a mobile phone within Moldova, callers may need to include the 0 and area code even if the destination is in the same district, depending on the mobile operator's routing rules. It is always safe to use the full domestic format.

Caller Instructions

For local callers within the Singerei area, short-dialing (omitting the area code) may be possible for calls within the same exchange, but this is not guaranteed across all operators. For clarity and reliability, it is recommended to always use the full national numbering format. Foreign callers should note that Moldova's country code is +373 and that the area code 262 is used exclusively for fixed-line services; mobile numbers in Moldova use non-geographic prefixes starting with 6, 7, or 8.
