📍 Geographic Location of Edineţ
Overview of Area Code +373 246
Area code 246 is a geographic National Destination Code (NDC) within the Republic of Moldova's national numbering plan, conforming to ITU-T E.164. It serves the northern administrative district of Edineţ, including the municipality of Edineţ and surrounding localities. The code is assigned to fixed-line PSTN services, operated primarily by the national incumbent, Moldtelecom, though alternative licensed fixed operators may also utilize this range.
Geographic Coverage and Jurisdiction
The 246 NDC covers the Edineţ District (raion), situated in the northern part of Moldova, bordering Ukraine. Key towns and villages within this code include Edineţ (the administrative center), Cupcini, and nearby communes. The district is part of the Northern Development Region and is characterized by a mix of urban and rural settlements.
Dialing Formats
For callers within Moldova, the national trunk prefix is 0, followed by the area code and the subscriber number. The local subscriber number length within the 246 area is typically 5 digits, resulting in a total national significant number (NSN) of 8 digits (0-246-XXXXX).
- National dialing (within Moldova): 0 246 XX XX X
- International dialing (from abroad): +373 246 XX XX X
For example, a local number might be formatted as 0 246 2 34 56 when dialed domestically, and +373 246 2 34 56 when dialed from outside Moldova. Note that the leading '0' is dropped in international format.
Caller Instructions
Local callers (within Edineţ): If you are calling from a fixed line within the same area code, you may be able to dial only the 5-digit subscriber number, depending on your operator's settings. However, for consistency and to avoid errors, it is recommended to use the full national format (0-246-XXXXX).
Callers from other Moldovan regions: Dial the trunk prefix 0, then the area code 246, followed by the subscriber number: 0 246 XX XX X.
International callers: Dial your country's exit code (e.g., 00 from most European countries, 011 from the US/Canada), then Moldova's country code 373, then the area code 246 (without the leading 0), and the subscriber number: +373 246 XX XX X.
Overlay and Numbering Considerations
As of the latest ITU-T operational bulletin, there is no overlay code for the Edineţ area. The 246 code is exclusively assigned to geographic fixed-line services. Mobile numbers in Moldova use separate non-geographic NDCs (e.g., 60-69, 78, 79) and are not affected by this area code. Number portability exists for fixed lines within Moldova, so a number with the 246 prefix may occasionally be served by an operator other than the original assignee, but it remains geographically tied to the Edineţ region.
