Area Code 824 – Sabinas Hidalgo, NL

Overview of Area Code 824

Area code 824 is a geographic National Destination Code (NDC) within the Mexican numbering plan, assigned to the municipality of Sabinas Hidalgo in the state of Nuevo León (NL). This region is part of the northeastern border area of Mexico, approximately 110 kilometers north of Monterrey, the state capital. The code serves a mix of urban and rural communities, with Sabinas Hidalgo as the primary city, along with surrounding localities such as Ciénega de Flores, Agualeguas, and parts of the Lampazos area, depending on the specific exchange.

Dialing Formats and Usage

For callers within Mexico, the local dialing format for numbers in area code 824 is 824 XXX XX XX (10 digits total, without the national trunk prefix 01). When dialing from abroad, the international format is +52 824 XXX XX XX, where +52 is Mexico's country calling code. It is important to note that Mexico uses a closed numbering plan; therefore, the national trunk prefix 01 is only used for domestic long-distance calls within Mexico, and the international access code 00 is used for calls originating outside the country.

Geographic Coverage and Administrative Jurisdiction

The area code 824 falls under the jurisdiction of the Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT) and is allocated to the state of Nuevo León. The region is characterized by its proximity to the U.S.-Mexico border, with the city of Sabinas Hidalgo serving as a commercial and agricultural hub. The area is also known for its historical significance and is part of the Northern region's economic corridor. For local callers, dialing within the same area code typically requires only the 8-digit subscriber number, but due to overlay and numbering resource optimization, it is recommended to always use the full 10-digit format (824 + 7-digit number) to ensure proper routing, especially for mobile and VoIP services.

Caller Instructions

• Local callers (within Mexico): Dial the 10-digit number: 824 XXX XX XX. If you are in a different area code, you must prefix with 01 for domestic long-distance: 01 824 XXX XX XX.
• International callers: Dial your country's international access code (e.g., 011 from the U.S./Canada), then Mexico's country code 52, then the area code 824, and the 7-digit subscriber number: +52 824 XXX XX XX.

Overlay and Numbering Considerations

As of the latest IFT updates, area code 824 does not have an overlay code; however, due to the increasing demand for telecommunication services, the IFT has implemented measures to ensure number portability and efficient use of resources. Users may encounter numbers that have been ported from other regions, but the area code remains indicative of the original geographic allocation. For businesses, it is essential to verify the correct dialing format to avoid call failures, especially when integrating VoIP systems that may require the international format for outbound calls.
