Area Code 418 – Dolores Hidalgo/San Diego de la Union, GTO

Geographic Coverage and Administrative Jurisdiction

The Mexican area code 418 is a geographic National Destination Code (NDC) assigned to the northern and central portion of the state of Guanajuato (GTO). It serves the municipalities of Dolores Hidalgo (officially Dolores Hidalgo Cuna de la Independencia Nacional) and San Diego de la Unión, as well as surrounding localities and rural areas. These municipalities are part of the administrative region known as the 'Noreste de Guanajuato' and are situated within the country's central highlands, approximately 60 kilometers north of the state capital, Guanajuato City.

Primary Cities and Localities

The principal urban center within this code is Dolores Hidalgo, a historic city renowned as the cradle of Mexican independence. Other important towns include San Diego de la Unión, San Francisco de Asís, and Rincón de Centeno. The area is characterized by a mix of urban and rural communities, with economic activities ranging from agriculture and livestock to tourism and small-scale manufacturing.

Dialing Formats and Instructions

For callers within Mexico, the domestic long-distance format requires dialing the long-distance prefix 01, followed by the area code and the seven-digit local number. For example, to call a landline in Dolores Hidalgo from Mexico City, you would dial: 01 418 123 4567.

For international callers, the format follows the ITU-T E.164 standard: dial the international access prefix (e.g., 00 from most countries, or + from mobile phones), then Mexico's country code 52, the area code 418, and the seven-digit subscriber number. For instance, from the United States, you would dial: 011 52 418 123 4567 or +52 418 123 4567 from a mobile phone.

Numbering Plan and Overlay Considerations

Currently, the 418 area code operates without an overlay, meaning that all landlines within the region share the same seven-digit numbering space. However, as part of Mexico's ongoing numbering resource optimization, the Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT) has implemented measures to ensure sufficient numbering capacity. No overlay has been announced for this area at the time of writing, but subscribers should be aware that ten-digit dialing (including the area code) is mandatory for all calls within Mexico, even for local calls placed within the same area code. This means that to call a number in the same city, you must still dial the full ten-digit number: 418 123 4567.

Caller Instructions

Local callers within the 418 area code must dial the ten-digit number (area code + local number) for all calls, including those to neighboring towns. National callers from other area codes must use the long-distance prefix 01 before the ten-digit number. International callers must use the country code +52 followed by the ten-digit number. It is important to note that mobile numbers in Mexico are also ten digits and begin with a '1' or '2' after the area code, but this code is exclusively for fixed-line services.

Conclusion

Understanding the correct dialing procedures for area code 418 ensures seamless connectivity with businesses, government offices, and residents in this historically significant region of Guanajuato. Whether you are planning a visit, conducting business, or contacting family, using the proper format will guarantee that your call reaches its intended destination.
