Area Code 654 – Shaviyani

Overview of Maldives Area Code 654

Area code 654 is a geographic destination code within the Republic of Maldives, assigned to the Shaviyani Atoll administrative division. In the Maldivian national numbering plan, geographic codes are allocated to specific atolls and islands, and this code is used for fixed-line (PSTN) services within that region. The Maldives country calling code is +960, and all national numbers, including those under 654, are seven digits in length when dialed internationally.

Coverage and Administrative Jurisdiction

Shaviyani Atoll is located in the northern part of the Maldives and comprises several inhabited islands, including Funadhoo (the capital), Feevah, Narudhoo, and Milandhoo, among others. The area code 654 is used for fixed-line connections in this atoll, serving government offices, businesses, and residential subscribers. It is important to note that mobile numbers in the Maldives are non-geographic and begin with 7, 9, or 8, so 654 is exclusively associated with fixed-line services.

Dialing Formats

For callers within the Maldives, dialing a Shaviyani fixed-line number requires only the seven-digit national number, which includes the area code. For example, to reach a subscriber whose number is 6541234, a local caller would simply dial 6541234. However, when calling from abroad, the full international format must be used: +960 6541234. Note that the leading '0' is not used in international dialing; the country code +960 is followed directly by the seven-digit number.

Caller Instructions

Local callers (within Maldives): Dial the seven-digit number directly. No trunk prefix is required. International callers: Dial your country's international access prefix (e.g., 011 from the US, 00 from most European countries), followed by the Maldives country code 960, and then the seven-digit number. For example, from the US, you would dial 011 960 6541234.

Overlay and Numbering Considerations

As of the latest ITU-T E.164 guidelines, the Maldives has not implemented overlay codes for geographic areas. Each atoll has a distinct area code, and number lengths are standardized. The numbering plan is managed by the Communications Authority of Maldives (CAM), which ensures that geographic codes remain associated with their respective atolls. There are no plans to introduce additional digits or overlays for Shaviyani Atoll at this time.

Practical Usage

Understanding the correct dialing format is essential for businesses and individuals who need to reach fixed-line customers or offices in Shaviyani Atoll. Whether you are a tourist contacting a guesthouse or a company coordinating with a local partner, using the proper international format ensures successful call completion. Always verify the complete seven-digit number, as omitting the area code or misdialing the country code can lead to failed connections.
