Overview of Luxembourgish Geographic Numbering

In the Luxembourgish national numbering plan, geographic numbers are allocated by the Institut Luxembourgeois de Régulation (ILR) according to the ITU-T E.164 recommendation. These numbers are used for fixed-line services and are associated with specific exchanges or localities. The prefix 2472 is a geographic National Destination Code (NDC) assigned to the Echternach area, a historic town in eastern Luxembourg near the German border. Echternach is known for its abbey and the annual hopping procession, and it serves as the administrative center of the canton of Echternach.

Coverage and Dialing Formats

The 2472 prefix covers the Echternach exchange area, which includes the town of Echternach and its surrounding localities. Subscribers within this area typically have eight-digit subscriber numbers, with the full national number being ten digits when including the leading '0' for domestic calls. The international format for calling Echternach from abroad is +352 2472 xxx xx (where xxx xx represents the subscriber's unique line number). Regulatory and Technical Notes

Luxembourg has implemented number portability, allowing subscribers to retain their geographic numbers when changing operators, but the prefix remains associated with the original geographic area. The ILR oversees the allocation and management of numbering resources, ensuring efficient use and compliance with European Union directives. As of recent years, there have been no overlay codes for Echternach; the 2472 prefix remains the sole geographic code for that exchange. However, with the growth of VoIP and fixed wireless services, some numbers with this prefix may be used by non-traditional operators, but the geographic association remains for routing and emergency services purposes.
