Area Code 2424 – Luxembourg

Overview of Luxembourg Area Code 2424

Area code 2424 is a geographic National Destination Code (NDC) assigned within the Luxembourg national numbering plan, administered by the Institut Luxembourgeois de Régulation (ILR). It serves the central region of the Grand Duchy, primarily covering the capital city, Luxembourg City, and its immediate urban agglomeration. This code is used for fixed-line PSTN and VoIP services, providing local numbers that are part of the national E.164 numbering structure.

Geographic Coverage and Administrative Jurisdiction

The 2424 prefix is allocated to the Luxembourg City area, which is not only the political capital but also the country's largest urban center and a major financial hub. The administrative jurisdiction includes the Ville de Luxembourg and its surrounding communes, such as Strassen, Bertrange, and Hesperange. As a geographic code, it is tied to a specific exchange area, although in modern telecom networks, the physical location of the line may not strictly correspond to the code due to number portability and VoIP services.

Dialing Formats and Caller Instructions

For international callers, the full international format is +352 2424 xxxx, where +352 is the country calling code for Luxembourg, and 2424 is the NDC. The subscriber number typically consists of 4 to 6 digits following the NDC, making the total national significant number (NSN) length 8 to 9 digits. When dialing from within Luxembourg, callers must use the national format 2424 xxxx without the leading trunk prefix, as Luxembourg does not use a trunk prefix like '0'. For example, a local call to a number in the 2424 range would be dialed as 2424 1234. Foreign callers should dial +352 2424 1234 or 00352 2424 1234 from countries using the international prefix 00.

Overlay and Numbering Plan Considerations

Luxembourg does not have overlay codes in the traditional sense; instead, the country uses a closed numbering plan where all fixed-line numbers are 8 or 9 digits long, including the NDC. The 2424 code is one of several geographic codes assigned to the capital region, alongside other codes like 22, 26, and 27. Number portability is available, allowing subscribers to retain their 2424 number when changing providers or moving within the country, which can lead to numbers being used outside their original geographic area.

Practical Usage and Examples

Businesses and residents in Luxembourg City commonly use 2424 numbers for their main lines. For instance, a company might have a main switchboard number +352 2424 5000. When calling from abroad, it is essential to omit any leading '0' that might be used in local dialing conventions in other countries. Since Luxembourg does not use trunk prefixes, the number is dialed exactly as +352 2424 5000. For local callers, simply dial 2424 5000. This simplicity is a hallmark of Luxembourg's efficient numbering plan.
