Area Code 2422 – Luxembourg City

Overview of +352 2422

The international dialing code +352 2422 is a geographic number range assigned to Luxembourg City, the capital and largest urban center of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. As part of the national numbering plan administered by the Institut Luxembourgeois de Régulation (ILR), this prefix is used for fixed-line services within the central business district and surrounding residential areas. Unlike mobile or non-geographic numbers, the 2422 prefix is tied to physical infrastructure, primarily copper and fiber-optic networks operated by national carriers such as POST Luxembourg and alternative local loop providers.

Geographic Coverage and Numbering Details

The code covers the historical center of Luxembourg City, including neighborhoods like Ville Haute, Gare, and Kirchberg, where many government institutions, financial firms, and EU offices are located. Numbers under +352 2422 follow the standard Luxembourgish format: +352 2422 XXXX, with a total subscriber number length of four digits after the prefix. When dialing locally within Luxembourg, callers typically omit the country code and leading '0' (Luxembourg uses no trunk prefix), so a local call would be placed as 2422 XXXX. For international callers, the full format +352 2422 XXXX is required, replacing the '+' with the appropriate international access code (e.g., 00 from most European countries).

Dialing Instructions and Overlays

Luxembourg does not use area codes in the traditional sense; instead, the entire country is a single numbering plan area. The 2422 prefix is one of several geographic ranges allocated to the capital, with other prefixes like 22, 26, and 27 also serving different districts. There are no overlay codes or per-call charges beyond standard national rates. For local callers, dialing just the eight-digit subscriber number (including the prefix) is sufficient. For foreign callers, it is essential to use the country code +352 and omit any leading '0' that might appear in local directories. Calls to +352 2422 numbers from abroad are routed via international gateways and incur standard international tariffs, which vary by carrier.

Usage and Practical Considerations

Businesses and residents in Luxembourg City rely on these numbers for reliable fixed-line communications. Many organizations use these lines for customer service, administrative contacts, and fax services. When calling from a mobile phone within Luxembourg, the same dialing rules apply. It is also important to note that number portability is available, meaning a number starting with 2422 may be assigned to a different operator, but the geographic association remains. For VoIP users, ensure that your provider supports international dialing to Luxembourg and that you correctly enter the number in E.164 format.
