Area Code 318 – Lazdijai

Overview of Area Code +370 318

Area code 318 is a geographic National Destination Code (NDC) within the Lithuanian national numbering plan, conforming to ITU-T E.164 recommendations. It is assigned to the Lazdijai district, located in the southern part of the country near the borders with Poland and Belarus. The code serves the administrative territory of Lazdijai District Municipality, including the city of Lazdijai and surrounding towns and villages such as Veisiejai, Kapčiamiestis, and Šventežeris.

Geographic Coverage and Administrative Jurisdiction

Lazdijai district is part of the Alytus County. The area code 318 covers all fixed-line telephone subscribers within this district, providing local PSTN services. The region is primarily rural, with the largest population center being the town of Lazdijai itself, which serves as the administrative hub. Other notable settlements within the code area include the resort town of Veisiejai, known for its lakes, and the border crossing point at Kapčiamiestis.

Dialing Formats

When calling a fixed-line number in the Lazdijai area, the standard national format is:

• National (domestic) dialing: 8 318 XXX XX or 0 318 XXX XX (depending on the operator's trunk prefix; in Lithuania, both 8 and 0 are used for trunk access).
• International dialing: +370 318 XXX XX (from any country outside Lithuania).

For example, a local number might be written as +370 318 5 12 34. When calling from within Lithuania, you would dial 8 318 5 12 34 (or 0 318 5 12 34). The subscriber number typically consists of 5 to 7 digits, but the total length of the national significant number (NSN) is 8 digits, including the area code.

Overlay and Numbering Considerations

As of the latest ITU-T operational bulletin, there is no overlay code for the Lazdijai area. The 318 code is unique to this geographic region. However, number portability is available in Lithuania, allowing fixed-line subscribers to retain their numbers when changing operators within the same geographic area. This means that a number with the 318 prefix may not necessarily be physically located in Lazdijai if the subscriber has moved but kept the number, though this is rare for fixed lines.

Caller Instructions

• Local callers (within Lazdijai): For calls within the same area code, you may dial only the subscriber number (without the area code) in some cases, but it is safer to dial the full national number including the trunk prefix and area code to ensure proper routing.
• Domestic callers from other Lithuanian regions: Dial 8 318 followed by the subscriber number.
• International callers: Dial your country's exit code (e.g., 00 from most European countries, 011 from the US/Canada), then 370 (Lithuania's country code), then 318, and finally the subscriber number. Do not add any leading zero.

For example, to call a business in Lazdijai from the United States, you would dial: 011 370 318 5 12 34.

Always verify the current numbering plan with your telecom provider, as local dialing procedures may vary.
