Area Code 727 – Zawaya

Overview of Area Code 727 (Libya)

Area code 727 is a geographic National Destination Code (NDC) assigned to the region of Zawaya (also spelled Zawiyah or Az Zawiyah) in the northwestern part of Libya. This code is part of the national numbering plan under the country calling code +218, as defined by the ITU-T E.164 recommendation. The Zawaya district is a significant administrative and commercial hub, located approximately 40 kilometers west of the capital, Tripoli.

Geographic Coverage and Administration

The 727 area code serves the city of Zawaya and its surrounding towns and villages, including areas like Al-Zahra, Al-Maya, and Bir Shuaib. Administratively, Zawaya is one of Libya's districts (Sha'biyah) and is known for its agricultural production, particularly olives and citrus fruits. The region is also home to several industrial facilities and educational institutions, including the Zawiya Oil Refinery, one of the largest in the country.

Dialing Formats

When dialing a landline number within Zawaya from another local exchange within Libya, callers must use the full national number, which includes the trunk prefix 0, the area code 727, and the subscriber number. The national format is: 0 727 XXX XXX (where X represents the subscriber digits). For example, a local call to a Zawaya number would be dialed as 0727 123 456.

For international callers, the format requires the Libyan country code +218, followed by the area code without the leading trunk prefix, and then the subscriber number. Thus, an international caller would dial +218 727 123 456. It is essential to omit the initial 0 when dialing from abroad.

Overlay and Numbering Considerations

Currently, there is no overlay plan in effect for the Zawaya area code, meaning that the 727 code is unique to this geographic region. Subscriber numbers within this code typically consist of six digits, resulting in a total national significant number length of nine digits (including the area code). As Libya continues to modernize its telecommunications infrastructure, including the expansion of fiber-optic networks and VoIP services, the numbering plan may undergo adjustments. However, as of now, the 727 code remains dedicated to fixed-line services in the Zawaya district.

Caller Instructions

For local callers within Libya, always include the trunk prefix 0 before the area code when dialing from a different city or mobile phone. For example, to call a Zawaya number from Tripoli, dial 0727 123 456. For foreign callers, ensure you have the correct international access code (e.g., 00 from many countries) and then dial 218 727 123 456. Always verify the subscriber number length, as it may vary, but the standard is six digits.
