Area Code 724 – Ghat

Geographic Overview

The +218 724 area code is a geographic National Destination Code (NDC) assigned to the Ghat region in southwestern Libya. Ghat is a historic oasis town and the capital of the Ghat District, located in the Sahara Desert near the borders with Algeria and Niger. The area code covers the city of Ghat and its surrounding settlements, including the nearby archaeological sites and the Akakus Mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its prehistoric rock art. The region is sparsely populated, with Ghat town serving as the primary administrative and commercial center.

Dialing Formats

For international callers, the full number format is: +218 724 XXX XXX, where 724 is the area code and the subscriber number typically consists of six digits. When dialing from within Libya, callers must use the national trunk prefix 0 before the area code, resulting in: 0 724 XXX XXX. For example, a local number in Ghat might be dialed as +218 724 123 456 from abroad or 0724 123 456 from within Libya.

Administrative Jurisdiction

The Ghat area code is part of Libya's national numbering plan, administered by the General Telecommunications Authority (GTA) and the Libyan Post, Telecommunications and Information Technology Company (LPTIC). The code is designated for fixed-line PSTN services, though some VoIP providers may also use it for geographic numbers. The region's low population density means that the area code serves a limited number of subscribers, and there are currently no overlay codes or planned changes to the numbering structure.

Caller Instructions

• Local callers (within Libya): Dial 0 followed by the area code and subscriber number. Example: 0724 123 456.
• International callers: Dial your country's exit code (e.g., 00 or 011), then Libya's country code +218, followed by the area code without the leading 0, and the subscriber number. Example: +218 724 123 456.
• Callers from mobile phones in Libya: Often can dial the number in international format (+218 724 XXX XXX) even for domestic calls, depending on the mobile operator's settings.

As with all geographic codes in Libya, the area code is essential for routing calls to the correct region. Misuse or omission of the area code will result in failed connections or misdirected calls. For the most current dialing procedures, especially for VoIP or satellite services, users should consult their service provider.
