Area Code 521 – Zliten

Geographic Overview

The +218 521 area code is a geographic National Destination Code (NDC) assigned to the city of Zliten, located in the Misrata District of northwestern Libya, along the Mediterranean coast. Zliten is a historic city known for its agricultural production, educational institutions (including the Faculty of Arts at the University of Zliten), and its role as a regional commercial hub. The code covers the urban area of Zliten and its immediate surroundings, including nearby towns and villages that fall within the city's administrative boundaries.

Dialing Formats

When calling a landline in Zliten from within Libya, subscribers use the national trunk prefix 0, followed by the area code 521 and the subscriber number. The complete national format is: 0 521 XXX XXX (where X represents the local subscriber digits). For example, a local number might be dialed as 0521 123 456 from within Libya.

For international callers, the Libyan country code +218 is used, followed by the area code 521 and the subscriber number, without the leading trunk prefix. The international format is: +218 521 XXX XXX. For instance, to call a Zliten landline from abroad, you would dial +218 521 123 456.

Caller Instructions

Local callers within Libya: When calling from another city or from a mobile phone, you must include the trunk prefix and area code. For example, dial 0521 123 456. If you are calling from within Zliten itself, you may be able to dial just the local subscriber number, but it is recommended to always use the full national format to ensure connectivity, especially as network configurations may vary.

International callers: Always use the international access prefix of your country (e.g., 00 from most European countries, 011 from the US/Canada) followed by Libya's country code 218, then the area code 521 and the subscriber number. Do not include the leading '0' of the national trunk prefix. Example: 00 218 521 123 456.

Numbering Plan Considerations

Libya's numbering plan follows ITU-T E.164 recommendations. Geographic area codes like 521 are assigned to fixed-line services provided by the state-owned operator (Libya Telecom & Technology) and private operators. The subscriber number length for Zliten landlines is typically 6 digits, making the total national significant number (NSN) length 9 digits (including the area code). There are currently no overlay codes in Zliten; the 521 code is exclusively used for the geographic area. However, due to network expansion, some numbers may be used for VoIP services that are location-independent, but they retain the geographic code for regulatory reasons.

For accurate dialing, always verify the current number length and any changes with your telecom provider, as numbering plans can be updated.
