Area Code 3128 – Bishkek, Chuy region

Geographic Coverage and Administrative Jurisdiction

Area code 3128 is a geographic National Destination Code (NDC) assigned to the Bishkek metropolitan area and parts of the Chuy region in Kyrgyzstan. Bishkek, the capital and largest city, serves as the administrative, economic, and cultural hub of the country. The Chuy region surrounds the capital and extends to the Kazakh border, encompassing key towns such as Tokmok, Kant, and Kara-Balta. This code is used for fixed-line (PSTN) services within this defined geographic area, adhering to the ITU-T E.164 international numbering plan.

Dialing Formats and Caller Instructions

For local callers within Kyrgyzstan, the national significant number (NSN) for numbers under this code is 9 digits, comprising the area code (3128) followed by a 5-digit subscriber number. To call a Bishkek number from another city in Kyrgyzstan, dial 0 3128 XXXX X (the trunk prefix '0' is used for domestic calls). For international callers, the full international format is +996 3128 XXXX X, where +996 is the country calling code for Kyrgyzstan. When dialing from abroad, omit the leading '0' and replace it with the '+' sign or the appropriate international access code (e.g., 00 from many countries).

Numbering Structure and Overlay Considerations

Subscriber numbers under the 3128 code are typically 5 digits long, making the total NSN length 9 digits. This structure is consistent with other geographic codes in Kyrgyzstan. Currently, there is no overlay code for Bishkek, meaning 3128 is the primary fixed-line code for the capital. However, due to the growth of VoIP and mobile services, some subscribers may have migrated to non-geographic numbers, but traditional fixed-line services in this region continue to rely on 3128. Callers should always verify the complete number, as misdialing can route to unintended destinations within the Chuy region.

Practical Usage and Tips

When calling a Bishkek fixed-line number from a mobile phone within Kyrgyzstan, it is essential to include the trunk prefix '0' before the area code. From abroad, ensure you have the correct country code and area code, and be mindful of time zone differences (Kyrgyzstan Time, UTC+6). For businesses, having a local 3128 number establishes a presence in the capital and facilitates communication with government institutions, corporate offices, and local clients. Always confirm the number with the recipient, as number portability may allow fixed-line numbers to be routed to other networks, though this is less common for geographic codes.
