Area Code 3122 – Bishkek, Chuy region

Geographic Coverage and Administrative Jurisdiction

Area code 3122 is a geographic National Destination Code (NDC) assigned to the capital city of Bishkek and its immediate surrounding areas within the Chuy Region of the Kyrgyz Republic. Bishkek serves as the administrative, economic, and cultural hub of the country, hosting all major government institutions, foreign embassies, and corporate headquarters. The code is used for fixed-line (PSTN) services within this defined geographic area, and it is not assigned to mobile or nomadic services.

Dialing Formats and Number Structure

When calling a Bishkek landline from abroad, the international format is +996 3122 X XX XX, where +996 is the country calling code for Kyrgyzstan, 3122 is the NDC, and the subscriber number typically consists of six digits. From within Kyrgyzstan, callers must dial the trunk prefix 0 before the area code, resulting in 0 3122 X XX XX. For local calls within Bishkek, the area code may be omitted, depending on the operator's dialing plan, but it is always required when calling from other regions of the country.

Numbering Plan and Overlay Considerations

The Kyrgyz numbering plan follows the ITU-T E.164 recommendation. The NDC 3122 is a closed numbering plan segment, meaning that the subscriber number length is fixed. There is no overlay code for Bishkek; the geographic area is served exclusively by 3122 for fixed-line services. However, with the increasing adoption of VoIP and IP-based telephony, some operators may route calls to 3122 numbers over IP networks, but the dialing format remains unchanged.

Caller Instructions

• Local callers within Bishkek can dial the subscriber number directly (without the area code) if supported by their operator. Otherwise, they should dial 0 3122 X XX XX.
• Callers from other regions in Kyrgyzstan must dial 0 3122 X XX XX.
• International callers should dial their country's international access prefix (e.g., 00 from most countries, or + from mobile phones) followed by 996 3122 X XX XX.

Practical Examples

To illustrate, a typical Bishkek landline number might be +996 3122 55 12 34. From the United States, you would dial 011 996 3122 55 12 34. From a UK mobile, you would dial 00 996 3122 55 12 34. Within Kyrgyzstan, from another city, you would dial 0 3122 55 12 34.

Regulatory and Service Notes

The State Agency for Communications under the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic regulates the national numbering plan. Fixed-line services in Bishkek are provided by Kyrgyz Telecom and several alternative operators. While number portability is available for mobile numbers, fixed-line portability within geographic areas is limited. When contacting businesses or government offices in Bishkek, always verify the correct number format, as some entities may use short codes or special service numbers that are not part of the standard geographic numbering range.
