Area Code 2485 – Shirakawa, Fukushima

Geographic Overview

The +81 2485 prefix is a geographic area code assigned to the Shirakawa region in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. This area code serves Shirakawa City and the surrounding municipalities, including Nishigo Village, Izumizaki Village, and parts of the broader Nakadori region. The code is part of Japan's national numbering plan, administered by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) and allocated to NTT East, the dominant fixed-line carrier in the region.

Dialing Formats and Number Structure

When dialing a landline in Shirakawa from within Japan, subscribers must dial the national trunk prefix 0, followed by the area code 2485 and the subscriber number, which typically consists of 5 to 6 digits. For example, a local number might be dialed as 02485-12345 from elsewhere in Japan. However, within the same area code, callers can often omit the area code and dial only the subscriber number, depending on the specific local dialing rules.

For international callers, the number must be dialed in E.164 format: the Japanese country code +81, followed by the area code without the leading zero, and then the subscriber number. Thus, the same number would be dialed as +81 2485 12345 from outside Japan. It is crucial to drop the initial '0' when dialing from abroad.

Geographic Coverage and Administrative Jurisdiction

Shirakawa City is a significant commercial and administrative hub in the southern part of Fukushima Prefecture. The area code 2485 covers the city center and its wards, including the historic castle town area and the modern commercial districts. The region is known for its agricultural production, particularly rice and fruits, as well as its historical sites such as Komine Castle and the Shirakawa Barrier ruins. The area code also serves the nearby villages, which are administratively linked to Shirakawa for telecommunication purposes.

Overlay and Numbering Considerations

As of the latest updates, there is no overlay code for the 2485 area. The region uses a closed numbering plan for local calls, meaning that within the same area code, callers do not need to dial the area code. However, for calls from other area codes in Japan, the full national format with the trunk prefix is required. This area code is not subject to number portability for fixed lines, but users can retain their numbers when switching between fixed-line carriers within the same geographic area.
