Overview of Area Code 1376

Area code 1376 is a geographic National Destination Code (NDC) within the Japanese telephone numbering plan, specifically assigned to the Yakumo region in southwestern Hokkaido. This area code serves the town of Yakumo and its surrounding communities, including parts of the former towns of Kumaishi and Otobe, which are now merged into Yakumo. The region is located along the Sea of Japan coast, known for its fishing industry and scenic landscapes.

Geographic Coverage and Administrative Jurisdiction

The 1376 area code covers the administrative area of Yakumo Town, which falls under the Hiyama Subprefecture of Hokkaido Prefecture. It includes the central urban area of Yakumo and extends to nearby rural districts. The numbering area is defined by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) and is operated by NTT East, the regional telecommunications carrier.

Dialing Formats

For local calls within the Yakumo area, callers can dial the subscriber number directly without the area code. However, when calling from outside the 1376 area code but still within Japan, the full national format must be used: 0-1376-XXXXXX, where X represents the subscriber number. For international callers, the format is +81-1376-XXXXXX, replacing the leading zero with Japan's country code +81.

Example: To call a Yakumo number from abroad, dial +81 1376 123456.

Overlay and Numbering Considerations

Currently, there is no overlay code for the 1376 area, meaning the area code is unique to this region. Subscriber numbers in this area typically consist of six digits, making the total national number length 10 digits (0-1376-XXXXXX). The numbering capacity is sufficient for the population density, and no changes are anticipated in the near future.

Caller Instructions

Local callers (within Yakumo): Dial the 6-digit subscriber number only.

Domestic callers (outside Yakumo): Dial 0, then the area code 1376, followed by the subscriber number.

International callers: Dial the international access code (e.g., 011 from the US), then Japan's country code 81, then the area code without the leading zero (1376), and finally the subscriber number.

Telecom Services

Both fixed-line and VoIP services are available in the area. VoIP users may need to include the area code even for local calls, depending on their service provider. Mobile phone numbers in Japan are not tied to geographic areas and use separate prefixes (e.g., 090, 080, 070), so they are not affected by area code 1376.
