Area Code 84 – Ilam province

Overview of Area Code +98 84

Area code 84 is the geographic National Destination Code (NDC) for the province of Ilam in the Islamic Republic of Iran. When dialed internationally, the full country calling code sequence is +98 84, followed by the local subscriber number. This code is allocated under the national numbering plan administered by the Communications Regulatory Authority of Iran (CRA) in accordance with ITU-T E.164 recommendations.

Geographic Coverage and Administrative Jurisdiction

The +98 84 code serves the entire Ilam province, which is located in the western part of Iran, bordering Iraq. The province's capital, Ilam city, along with other major towns such as Eyvan, Mehran, Abdanan, Dehloran, and Sarableh, are all reached through this code. The area is characterized by the Zagros Mountains and a mix of urban and rural settlements, all of which are included in the geographic routing area of the 84 NDC.

Dialing Formats and Instructions

For callers within Iran, the local dialing format is 084 followed by the subscriber number. The national trunk prefix is '0', which is used when dialing from one province to another within Iran. For example, to call a landline in Ilam from Tehran, you would dial: 084-XXXX XXXX (where X represents the local subscriber digits).

For international callers, the format is +98 84 XXXX XXXX. The leading '0' is omitted when dialing from abroad. For instance, a caller from the United States would dial: 011 98 84 XXXX XXXX, while a caller from the United Kingdom would dial: 00 98 84 XXXX XXXX.

Number Structure and Overlay Considerations

Local subscriber numbers in Ilam typically consist of 8 digits, making the total national significant number (NSN) length 10 digits when including the NDC (84). This structure is consistent with the Iranian national numbering plan. As of the latest updates, there are no overlay codes in Ilam; the 84 code is the sole geographic code for the province. However, users should be aware that number portability may allow subscribers to retain their numbers when changing operators, but this does not affect the geographic routing of landline numbers.

Caller Guidance

For local callers within Ilam, it is common to dial only the subscriber number without the area code when calling within the same local calling area. However, for clarity and to avoid misdialing, it is recommended to use the full national format (084 + subscriber number) when calling from mobile phones or from other provinces. For foreign callers, always ensure the correct international prefix for your country is used before the country code 98.
