Overview of Indonesia's +62 817 Mobile Prefix
The +62 817 prefix is a non-geographic mobile network code assigned within Indonesia's national numbering plan, following ITU-T E.164 standards. It is used exclusively for mobile telecommunications services, including voice, SMS, and data. Unlike geographic area codes, the 817 prefix does not correspond to a specific city or region; it is part of the country's mobile numbering range allocated to cellular operators. Subscribers with numbers beginning +62 817 can be located anywhere in Indonesia, and the prefix does not indicate a fixed location.
Dialing Format and Usage
To call an Indonesian mobile number with the 817 prefix from abroad, you must dial the international access code (e.g., 00 or +), followed by Indonesia's country code 62, then the mobile number without the leading trunk prefix '0'. For example, if the local number is 0817-XXXXXXX, you would dial +62 817-XXXXXXX. From within Indonesia, you would dial 0817-XXXXXXX using the national format. The total number length is typically 10 to 12 digits after the country code, including the leading '0' in national format.
International callers should note that the 817 prefix is part of Indonesia's mobile network, and calls are routed via international gateways to the appropriate mobile operator. SMS and MMS services are also supported, with international messaging requiring the full +62 817 number.
Mobile Network Operators and Portability
The 817 prefix is historically associated with PT Telekomunikasi Selular (Telkomsel), one of Indonesia's largest mobile network operators. However, due to mobile number portability (MNP) regulations introduced in Indonesia, subscribers may retain their 817 numbers when switching to other operators. Therefore, the prefix does not guarantee the current network operator; it only indicates the original allocation. This is important for businesses and individuals who rely on number recognition for marketing or contact purposes.
Regulatory and Technical Considerations
The allocation and management of the 817 prefix are overseen by the Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (Kominfo) and the national regulatory authority. The prefix is part of the closed numbering plan, meaning that all mobile numbers have a fixed length and must be dialed in full. There are no overlay codes or local dialing variations for mobile numbers; the same format applies nationwide.
For VoIP and OTT services, calls to +62 817 numbers are treated as mobile calls, and termination charges may apply. It is advisable to check with your service provider for international calling rates to Indonesian mobile numbers.
In summary, the +62 817 prefix is a vital component of Indonesia's mobile ecosystem, enabling connectivity for millions of users. Understanding its format and dialing rules ensures seamless communication with Indonesian mobile subscribers.
