Area Code 2899 – Catacamas

Overview of Area Code 2899 (Catacamas, Honduras)

Area code 2899 is a geographic National Destination Code (NDC) assigned to the city of Catacamas, located in the department of Olancho, Honduras. Catacamas is the second-largest city in Olancho and serves as a commercial and agricultural hub for the region. The code 2899 is part of the national numbering plan of Honduras, which follows the ITU-T E.164 standard, and is used for fixed-line (PSTN) services within this specific geographic area.

Geographic Coverage and Administrative Jurisdiction

The 2899 prefix covers the urban and suburban areas of Catacamas, including the city center and surrounding communities within the municipality. As a geographic code, it is tied to the physical location of the subscriber's line, and calls to 2899 numbers are routed to the Catacamas exchange. The code is administered by the national telecommunications regulator, Comisión Nacional de Telecomunicaciones (CONATEL), which allocates numbering resources to licensed fixed-line operators.

Dialing Formats and Procedures

To call a Catacamas fixed-line number from within Honduras, you must dial the national trunk prefix 0, followed by the area code 2899 and the subscriber number. The complete national format is: 0 2899 XXX XXX. For example, if the subscriber number is 123 4567, you would dial 0 2899 123 4567.

For international callers, you must dial your country's international access code (e.g., 011 from the US and Canada, 00 from most European countries), followed by Honduras's country code +504, and then the area code and subscriber number without the leading trunk prefix. The international format is: +504 2899 XXX XXX. For instance, to call the same number from abroad, you would dial +504 2899 123 4567.

It is important to note that Honduras uses a closed numbering plan for fixed lines: the area code and subscriber number together form a total of 8 digits (excluding the trunk prefix). There are no overlay codes currently in effect for Catacamas, so the 2899 code is unique to this area.

Caller Instructions and Considerations

Local callers within Catacamas may need to dial the full national number, including the area code, depending on the operator's requirements. In modern Honduran networks, even local calls often require the area code. For foreign callers, always ensure you have the correct international access code and drop the leading '0' of the national trunk prefix when dialing from abroad.

As with all geographic numbers, calls to 2899 are typically charged based on the caller's plan and the distance, but within Honduras, most fixed-line calls are now treated as national calls with uniform rates. For businesses and residents in Catacamas, having a 2899 number establishes a local presence and facilitates communication with clients and partners in the region.
