Area Code 2897 – San Fco. De Becerra

Overview of Area Code 2897

Area code 2897 is a geographic numbering plan allocation within the Republic of Honduras, specifically designated for the town of San Francisco de Becerra in the department of Olancho. This code is part of the national numbering plan administered by the Comisión Nacional de Telecomunicaciones (CONATEL), Honduras' telecommunications regulatory authority. As a geographic code, 2897 is tied to a physical location and is used for fixed-line (PSTN) services, including traditional copper lines and, increasingly, fixed wireless and VoIP services that are provisioned at a fixed address.

Coverage and Administrative Context

San Francisco de Becerra is a municipality located in the southern part of Olancho, one of Honduras' largest and most agriculturally significant departments. The area code 2897 serves the urban center of San Francisco de Becerra and its surrounding rural communities. The code is essential for routing calls to businesses, government offices, and residences within this jurisdiction. Olancho's capital, Juticalpa, is served by a different area code (e.g., 2785), so callers must dial 2897 specifically to reach San Francisco de Becerra.

Dialing Format and Instructions

Honduras uses a closed numbering plan with eight-digit subscriber numbers. The national significant number (NSN) is eight digits, comprising the area code (four digits) followed by a four-digit subscriber number. For area code 2897, the complete national number format is 2897-XXXX.

• Local calls (within San Francisco de Becerra): Dial the full eight-digit number, e.g., 2897-1234. Local calls are typically charged at a reduced rate.
• National calls (from other areas of Honduras): Dial 2897-1234 (no trunk prefix is required).
• International calls (from abroad): Dial the international access prefix (e.g., 011 from the US/Canada, 00 from most European countries), followed by Honduras' country code 504, then the eight-digit number: +504 2897-1234.

Overlay and Numbering Considerations

As of the latest CONATEL updates, there are no overlay codes for San Francisco de Becerra; 2897 is the sole area code for this locality. However, due to the growth of mobile and VoIP services, number portability exists in Honduras, allowing subscribers to retain their numbers when changing providers, though geographic numbers are generally tied to the area. Callers should always verify the area code when dialing to avoid misrouted calls.

Practical Guidance for Callers

For local callers, simply dial the eight-digit number. For international callers, remember to replace the leading '0' (if any) with the country code. For example, a call from the United States to a San Francisco de Becerra number would be dialed as 011 504 2897 5678. Always check with your service provider for international dialing rates and any restrictions on calling geographic numbers in Honduras.
