Area Code 2559 – Col. Satélite

Overview of Area Code 2559 (Col. Satélite)

Area code 2559 is a geographic numbering plan allocation within the Honduran national dialing framework, governed by the ITU-T E.164 standard and administered by the national regulatory authority (CONATEL). This code serves the Col. Satélite district, a residential and commercial zone located in the central-southern part of Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras. The prefix is part of the national destination code (NDC) structure for fixed-line services, specifically assigned to the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) infrastructure in that area.

Geographic Coverage and Jurisdiction

Col. Satélite is a well-established neighborhood within the Francisco Morazán department, which encompasses the capital city and its metropolitan area. The 2559 prefix is one of several central office codes (COCs) serving this district, providing local loop connectivity to homes, businesses, and government offices. The area is characterized by a mix of residential buildings, small enterprises, and public institutions, all relying on copper, fiber, or wireless local loop technologies for their fixed-line services.

Dialing Formats and Caller Instructions

For callers within Honduras, dialing a number in the 2559 area requires the national trunk prefix 0 followed by the eight-digit subscriber number. For example, to reach a local line, you would dial: 0-2559-XXXX (where XXXX is the four-digit subscriber extension). If you are calling from within the same local area, you may be able to omit the trunk prefix and area code, but this depends on your specific carrier's local dialing plan. For international callers, the format is: +504 2559 XXXX, where +504 is the country calling code for Honduras. Always replace the leading '0' with the international access code (e.g., 00 from many countries) when dialing from abroad.

Overlay and Numbering Considerations

As of the latest regulatory updates, there are no overlay codes for the Tegucigalpa metropolitan area; the 2559 prefix is exclusively used for fixed-line services. However, number portability is in effect, meaning that a subscriber may retain their 2559 number even if they switch to a different fixed-line operator, as long as they remain within the same geographic area. This ensures that the prefix does not strictly indicate the physical location of the line, but rather the original assignment zone.

Practical Usage and Tips

When placing a call to a 2559 number from a mobile phone within Honduras, you must include the trunk prefix and area code, as mobile networks do not support local 7-digit dialing. For businesses in Col. Satélite, having a 2559 number establishes a local presence and can reduce long-distance charges for customers in the capital. For international callers, it is essential to check time zones (Honduras is UTC-6) and be aware that calling rates may vary depending on your service provider. Always verify the complete number with the recipient, as misdialing the area code can result in reaching a different part of the country.
