Area Code 2511 – Cortes

Overview of Area Code 2511 in Honduras

Area code 2511 is a geographic National Destination Code (NDC) assigned to the department of Cortés in Honduras. This region encompasses the country's industrial and commercial heartland, including the city of San Pedro Sula, the nation's second-largest urban center and a major hub for manufacturing, logistics, and trade. The 2511 prefix serves both residential and business fixed-line subscribers within the local service area, operating under the national numbering plan administered by the Comisión Nacional de Telecomunicaciones (CONATEL).

Geographic Coverage and Administrative Jurisdiction

Cortés is located in the northwestern part of Honduras, bordering the Caribbean Sea and Guatemala. The 2511 code covers a portion of the metropolitan area of San Pedro Sula and its surrounding municipalities, such as La Lima and Villanueva. This area is characterized by a dense concentration of maquiladoras, international corporations, and commercial enterprises, making the prefix particularly relevant for business communications.

Dialing Formats and Caller Instructions

When dialing a number with the 2511 prefix, the format depends on the caller's location:

• Local calls (within Honduras): Dial the 8-digit subscriber number directly. For example, if the local number is 2511-XXXX, simply dial 2511-XXXX from any fixed or mobile line within the country.
• International calls (from abroad): Dial the international access prefix (e.g., 00 or +), followed by the Honduras country code 504, then the full 8-digit number. For instance, to reach a line with the local number 2511-XXXX, you would dial +504 2511-XXXX.

It is important to note that Honduras uses a closed numbering plan; there are no separate trunk prefixes or area codes for mobile vs. fixed lines. All national numbers are 8 digits long, and the leading '2' indicates a geographic fixed-line service.

Overlay and Number Portability Considerations

As of the latest regulatory updates, there are no overlay codes in the Cortés region; the 2511 prefix is used exclusively for fixed-line services. However, number portability is available in Honduras, allowing subscribers to retain their numbers when switching between fixed-line operators. This means that a number starting with 2511 may be served by any licensed fixed-line carrier, not necessarily the original incumbent.

Practical Tips for Callers

For local callers, ensure you include the full 8-digit number, as omitting the leading '2' will result in a failed call. For international callers, always use the +504 country code and drop any leading '0' that might appear in local directories. Since Honduras is in the Central Time Zone (UTC-6), consider time differences when placing calls to business offices in San Pedro Sula.
