Area Code 2221 – Almendros

Overview of Area Code 2221 in Honduras

Area code 2221 is a geographic prefix within the Honduran national numbering plan, specifically allocated to the Almendros area in the capital district of Tegucigalpa, Francisco Morazán Department. As part of the country's E.164 numbering structure, this code is used for fixed-line (PSTN) services, including traditional copper lines and some fixed wireless or VoIP-based local loops.

Geographic Coverage and Administrative Jurisdiction

The 2221 prefix serves the Almendros neighborhood and surrounding zones in the central-southern part of Tegucigalpa. This area falls under the administrative jurisdiction of the Municipalidad del Distrito Central. While Almendros is primarily residential and commercial, it is close to key business districts, government offices, and educational institutions. The prefix is not shared with other municipalities; it is exclusive to this part of the capital.

Dialing Formats and Caller Instructions

For local callers within Honduras, the number is dialed as an 8-digit national significant number: 2221-XXXX. For example, a local number might be 2221-1234. When calling from abroad, the full international format is +504 2221-XXXX. The country code for Honduras is +504, and there is no trunk prefix (such as '0') used in the Honduran numbering plan. Thus, international callers should dial +504 followed directly by the 8-digit subscriber number.

Overlay and Numbering Considerations

Currently, there is no overlay code for the 2221 area; it is a standalone geographic prefix. However, as part of the national numbering plan, the Comisión Nacional de Telecomunicaciones (CONATEL) manages number allocation and may introduce overlays in the future to address demand. For now, all fixed-line numbers in Almendros begin with 2221, and the remaining four digits are assigned to individual subscribers.

Caller Guidance

For local callers within Tegucigalpa, dialing the 8-digit number is sufficient. For callers in other parts of Honduras, dial the same 8-digit number without any additional prefix. International callers must include the +504 country code. It is important to note that while some fixed-line numbers may be used for VoIP services, the geographic nature of the prefix means that the number is associated with a physical location, which can affect emergency services routing and caller location identification.

For businesses in Almendros, having a 2221 number establishes a local presence and can be more cost-effective for customers calling from within Honduras. For foreign entities, using a 2221 number may require a local presence or a virtual number service, but it ensures that calls are routed to the Almendros exchange.
