Geographic Coverage and Administrative Jurisdiction
The area code +299 34 is a geographic National Destination Code (NDC) assigned to the capital city of Nuuk, the administrative and economic center of Greenland. Nuuk is the largest municipality in the country and serves as the seat of the Government of Greenland. The code covers the entire urban area of Nuuk, including its suburbs and surrounding settlements within the Sermersooq municipality. As a geographic prefix, it is tied to the PSTN infrastructure of the region, although modern services may also be delivered over IP-based networks.
Dialing Formats and Caller Instructions
When calling a landline in Nuuk from abroad, the international format is +299 34 XX XX (or +299 34 XXXXX, depending on the local number length). For example, a typical number might be +299 34 12 34. From within Greenland, callers must dial the national trunk prefix 0 followed by the area code and subscriber number: 0 34 XX XX. Local calls within Nuuk may require only the subscriber number, but this depends on the operator's dialing plan; always verify with your service provider.
Overlay and Numbering Considerations
Greenland's numbering plan is administered by the Telecommunication Regulatory Authority, and the country uses a closed numbering plan with a total length of 8 digits for subscriber numbers (including the NDC). The 34 prefix is exclusively for Nuuk, and there is currently no overlay code; the prefix is unique to the capital. Number portability is available for fixed-line services, allowing subscribers to retain their numbers when changing operators within the same geographic area.
Usage and Practical Information
Numbers under +299 34 are primarily used for businesses, government offices, and residential landlines in Nuuk. They are not assigned to mobile services, which use separate non-geographic prefixes. For international callers, it is essential to use the +299 country code and drop any leading zero. For example, to call a Nuuk number from the United States, you would dial 011 299 34 XX XX. From most European countries, dial 00 299 34 XX XX. Always confirm the exact number of digits, as some local numbers may have 5 or 6 digits after the area code.
