Area Code 2859 – Wesel-Bislich

Overview of Area Code 2859

Area code 02859 is a geographic National Destination Code (NDC) within the German telephone numbering plan, assigned to the locality of Wesel-Bislich, a district of the city of Wesel in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. This code falls under the regulatory authority of the Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur) and is used for fixed-line (PSTN) and VoIP services that are registered to this specific geographic area.

Geographic Coverage and Administrative Jurisdiction

Wesel-Bislich is situated on the left bank of the Lower Rhine, opposite the city center of Wesel. The area code 02859 covers not only Bislich but also the adjacent localities that are part of the Wesel municipal area, including Bislich, Lackhausen, and Bergerfurth (partially). Administratively, these are within the district of Wesel (Kreis Wesel) in the Regierungsbezirk Düsseldorf. The primary city center of Wesel itself uses the separate area code 0281, while 02859 is dedicated to the outlying districts that were historically independent municipalities before the 1975 municipal reform.

Dialing Formats and Caller Instructions

For local callers within the 02859 area, the short dialing format is simply the subscriber number without the area code, provided the call originates from within the same NDC. However, for all calls from outside the 02859 area (including from other German regions or mobile networks), the full national format must be used: 0 2859 [subscriber number]. For international callers, the country code for Germany (+49) replaces the leading zero, resulting in the format: +49 2859 [subscriber number].

Concrete examples:

• Local call (within 02859): dial 123456 (if the subscriber number is 123456).
• National call from another German city: dial 02859 123456.
• International call from abroad: dial +49 2859 123456.

Numbering Plan and Length

Subscriber numbers in the 02859 area typically have a length of 6 to 7 digits, making the complete national significant number (NDC + subscriber number) 10 to 11 digits long. The area code 02859 is not an overlay code; it is the sole NDC for this geographic region. No overlay or additional area codes have been introduced for this area, so local dialing remains straightforward.

Services and Usage

As a geographic code, 02859 is primarily used for fixed-line telephony services provided by Deutsche Telekom and other carriers. However, due to number portability, a subscriber may have a 02859 number that is actually served by a VoIP provider or a mobile network, but the number retains its geographic identity. This is important for callers to note: the cost of a call to a 02859 number is typically the same as any other German fixed-line call, regardless of the underlying technology. For businesses, having a 02859 number can establish a local presence in the Wesel-Bislich area, which is beneficial for local customer trust and marketing.
